Today's Song: Sacrifice by Immortal Souls
Over Thanksgiving vacation I listened to clips from a group of Christian black/death/extreme metal groups. As it happens there are a lot of them -- and most are considered very good too. However, many of these fall into the "metalcore" label or are otherwise the kind of extreme metal that doesn't actually include a lot of melody. In other words -- not that interesting to me.
I found what I was looking for with Immortal Souls, a melodic death metal band from Finland that sounds similar to some of the other melodic death metal bands I like. I ordered their cd Winterreich and after a few listens transfered the song Constant to my iPod, where I've been listening to it since.
A bit later I got hooked on another song of theirs, Sacrifice, after watching the Youtube video. I downloaded this one from iTunes, and I've been listening it for weeks as well. It's a very catchy tune as far as melodeath goes. Last week I decided I might as well buy the cd it comes from, Ice Upon the Night, as well.
This is not a band that hits you over the head with their faith. As Wikipedia puts it, "The texts of Immortal Souls deals experiences and motives of theChristian faith, and the visual language is based on the Nordic winternature and sometimes on Finnish folklore." Sacrifice is probably one of their most directly Christian songs that I've heard, but it's still open to interpretation:
All for the love..
I walk into moments darker than night;
Through the walls of apathy.
And all decay from which even the sun withdraws..
Oh - Light may fade, but the fire;
Fire's burning still..
Oh - Don't ask me to understand;
My need for your love.
And the sacrifice.. All for the love
