Today's Song: Gods & Monsters by the Toilet Boys
While researching girl bands like The Donnas, I was directed to The Toilet Boys. This is a New York City glam/punk band with no female members, although the lead singer calls himself "Miss Guy", but they are often compared to bands like The Donnas, The Runaways, Girlschool, etc. I suppose in the same way that many of these all-female bands were inspired by glam bands like Bowie, The Stooges, Sweet, etc., The Toilet Boys were inspired by the same bands as well as some of the aforementioned girl bands (and groups like the Ramones). In fact, they were first formed as an opening act for Debbie Harry of Blondie, so from the start you know what their influences were. Miss Guy was a DJ at the club where they first performed, and brought the band together specifically to fulfill his own dream of playing on stage with one of his biggest idols. It was intended to be a one-night only thing.
The rest, as they say, is history... literally, as they apparently disbanded several years ago after the Great White Rhode Island nightclub fire. The stage show by The Toilet Boys involved pyrotechnics that they felt were too integral to their act, and thus they disbanded rather than continue without it.
I own a couple of their older cds... but I hadn't realized that they released a cd of old material just a month or so ago. I downloaded the above song from iTunes. It's not as good as some of their other stuff, but I like it still.
They only have a few videos on Youtube and none of my favorite songs (I prefer Hollywood which is on their Myspace page, for example), but here's what's available:
Toilet Boys - Living Like A Millionaire
Toilet Boys - Saturday Night
Toilet Boys - Another Day in the Life
Toilet Boys - You Got It
