Today's Song: Girl in the War by Josh Ritter

Problem #1: I subscribe to eMusic. I pay $9.99 a month and get 30 mp3 downloads, but if I don't use them by the end of the month they go away.

Problem #2: I've downloaded an awful lot of heavy metal over the last few months. It's hard to find new stuff that I haven't already checked out. Some of the more popular alternative and pop bands -- well, let's just say more popular bands regardless of genre -- aren't to be found on eMusic. And yet, there is always more good music out there that I haven't heard yet.

Solution? Look at lists of "best releases of 2006" and the like posted on eMusic, read reviews there and on iTunes as well, check out the bands, listen to samples, and then pick a song from each artist that sounds good (usually one of the more popular ones).

So I've downloaded a bunch of songs tonight, by alternative rock and alternative country artists. Some of these people are really good, I can say that even though I've only sampled a couple of songs of theirs.

Josh Ritter is a singer-songwriter from Idaho. He crosses from country to folk to alt-rock, and in this song he sings about the war in Iraq. He's not really a huge fan, I take it.

Cool song though.
