Today's Song: In the Way by the Mommyheads
The Mommyheads were fronted by Adam Cohen who was not Adam Cohen, the musician son of Leonard Cohen, but was still a very gifted musician singer/songwriter. They released several well-recieved recordings on independent labels betweeen 1987 and 1997, and then in 1997 they made their major-label debut on DGC Records. Except that before the cd even came out, the subsidiary label they were on folded. The cd recieved no promotion and the band broke up.
All of this sounds strangely familiar to me. Another band that I've always liked, Atomic Opera, made their major-label debut in 1994 on Collision Arts, a DGC subsidiary. Only the subsidiary folded and their cd got no promotion. In their case, however, they went on to self-release several more cds and even had one release on Metal Blade.
Anyway the Mommyheads are a brilliant indie pop rock band, very Beatlesque in a way. It's a crime they aren't better known. They are so obscure, in fact, that I can't link to any of their songs on Youtube or Myspace... nor are they on iTunes, so you'll just have to take my word for it, they're good.
