Today's Song: Wipe Out by the Ventures
Well after all, if I'm on a surf guitar kick then let's not forget that one of the greatest surf guitar bands ever (well -- technically they're not just a surf band, bu you know) comes from my own back yard. Don't ask me why Seattle produced a band like the Ventures, just be aware that, when it comes to instrumental rock guitar bands, they were one of the first, one of the biggest, and are still around to take on all of the pretenders to the crown.
You know songs like Walk, Don't Run and their theme for the tv show Hawaii 5-0, but if you're still not convinced, consider these facts: because they were instrumental only, the Ventures have always been popular world-wide, and have produced many albums for the Japanese and European markets exclusively. They are the most popular American band ever in Japan. It's often said that they outsold the Beatles in Japan 2 to 1, and at one point in January 1966 they owned five of the top 10 singles in Japan. Their song Ginza Lights has been voted the most popular song of all time in Japan.
They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2008. Just a couple of weeks ago, in fact. ^_^
