Today's Song: Power and the Passion by Midnight Oil
I slipped an older mix disc into my car player last week, and I've been listening to some of my favorite songs from 2-3 years ago. Sometimes you forget what you used to like so much. One thing that it reminded me of was the band Midnight Oil -- they were one of my favorite bands throughout the late 1980's and the 1990's.
I tend to think of them in conjunction with other bands of the same era that were creative and popular "message" bands, such as U2, Live, The Alarm, even Simple Minds to a certain extent. Midnight Oil were from down under and were an activist band with a focus on the environment especially, but they also railed against big government and injustice for the poor and disenfranchised quite a bit. I've heard that some of their politics were influence by the lead singer's Christian beliefs, but they were not a band that sang about religion and their politics were to the far left of conservative Christian America.
I found out about them when their songs Beds are Burning and The Dead Heart were popular on the radio and MTV. They had more big hits when their Blue Sky Mine cd was released, and a few after that. But I always liked their cd Red Sails in the Sunset best, which came before their big success, but I liked the release before that, 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 as well. This song is from that cd, and is one of my favorites of theirs.
