Today's Song: Valkyrjan by Tyr
I've always thought that Solveig's Song from Grieg's Peer Gynt was hauntingly beautiful and melancholy. It's one of my favorite pieces of classical music.
This version by Meav, an Irish singer who toured with Anuna is in English and is especially beautiful, imo. (In fact I think I need to go pick this up.)
I loved when Norwegian goth/folk metal band Midnattsol based their song Tapt Av Hap on this tune (it's actually a cover of the original tune in the original language, Norwegian). In any case, it was one of the best songs on their debut cd.
Anyway... Tyr is one of my favorite viking metal groups. Unlike other folk/viking metal bands, they are not influenced by black metal but by mainstream metal like Iron Maiden and, even moreso, by progressive metal like Dream Theater. They just came out with a new cd and it's very, very good.
This song borrows its guitar melody directly from Grieg's Solveig's Song, so I liked it immediately:
