Today's Song: Spiders and Flies by Dead Soul Tribe
One of the cds I ordered recently that I was listening to last week was 2003's A Murder of Crows by Dead Soul Tribe. This is a progressive metal band from Austria that's a bit hard to categorize -- they like very dark lyrical subject matter, so in that sense they're kind of gothic or gloomy, but musically they're a diverse mix of things. They use tribal rhythms and sometimes employ a flute, something main songwriter/guitarist/singer/producer Devon Graves picked up because of his admiration for Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. Some of their songs, however, show a strong affinity for Tool. In fact I've seen the band nicknamed "Jethro Tool", heh. ^_^
Call it dark progressive metal I suppose. In some ways I associate them with Amorphis and Green Carnation, who are both also sort of dark progressive metal bands with intelligently-written lyrics, even though none of these three bands really sound like each other.
This song in particlar feels like a direct descendant of Tool. It's an interesting song. This is from one of their other cds, The January Tree, from 2004.
