Today's Song: If It Feels Good, Do It by Sloan
I've been listening to a lot of power pop over the Summer -- music that follows in the footsteps of The Beatles and 60's Britpop like "Bus Stop by the Hollies and Bubblegum rock like "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies or "Yummy Yummy Yummy" by 1910 Fruitgum Company. I love good power pop. Given that some of my earliest music favorites included power pop bands like ABBA and The Sweet (Fox on the Run), and I was later on a huge fan of bands like Blondie, The Cars, The Go Go's and the Bangles (still am), that shouldn't be surprising. However, power pop is one of those things that, when it's done right, I love it, but when it's not done right it winds up being bland, cliched, uninspired and usually with silly lyrics. Trying to find the really good stuff means listening to a lot of not-so-good stuff.
False Alarm by Sloan is one of those songs that's been stuck in my head for months, which means it works as a power pop song. I also liked several other songs by Canadian power pop band Sloan and picked up two of their cds over the Summer. Another song of theirs that I like is If It Feels Good, Do It, which I did finally remove from my iPod, but anyway, a good song:
