Today's Song: Another Awful Hob's Tale by Elvenking
Ok, I found a new cd that I need to own. If only I had been paying attention I would have added this to my Christmas list a month ago.
Elvenking is a Celtic folk-rock band from Italy. They've released several cds, but it was one of their earliest cds that I really liked, Wyrd. On this cd they mixed folk music with rock to great effect. For example, one of my favorite songs from that cd, MOonchariot.
The cd that followed this one, Winter Wake, was also good, if heavier. (I confess I still don't know much about their first cd Heathenreel, presumably it's good too.) But then a couple of years ago they released The Scythe. This cd was heavier and more commercial than anything they'd previously done. It seemed that the band wanted to chase fame and fortune and become a much more bland pop metal or "powercore" metal band, which was sad. It wasn't that The Scythe so much sucked as an album, it just was pretty far from the folk metal that they had originally exemplified. (Example: Poison Tears.
Last night when I discovered their accoustic cover of The Winter Wake I realized they had a new cd out. And it rocks! It's everything that Wyrd was -- folk music melded with metal. In other words, the band has come full circle and produced their best folk-metal cd ever, from what I can hear and have read. It's called Two Tragedy Poets (And a Caravan of Weird Figures). Strange name, but a great cd.
I downloaded this song from Amazon. It sounds great:
