Today's Song: Shashkin (Hefner Remix) by Omar Faruk Tekbilek
So my thing the last couple of days has been transglobal remix songs. This was brought on by hearing a song by Mari Boine, a Norwegian Sami singer who mixes native chants and singing with modern electronica. But I've downloaded a few other nicely remixed songs from around the world. This is one of those things that is really cool if done right, but which often seems done wrong to me... instead of getting a really cool traditional song with a funky electronica edge to it, you get a boring electronica song with bits of traditional music spliced in. This is one of the reasons why I'm not a very big Deep Forest fan, because they make all their music from old recordings of pygmy singers and no credit or money goes back to the original musicians -- unlike Baka Beyond, who record on location with the Baka tribe of Cameroon. It's not really that Deep Forest doesn't produce good music, it's just the principal of the thing I guess. ^_^
Anyway... one of the songs reccomended by iTunes turned out to not actually be available on iTunes -- apparently it had been removed since the reviewer wrote about it as part of their Transglobal Groove Remix essentials. It's this song, Shashkin (Hefner Remix) by original artist Omar Faruk Tekbilek (remixed by Hefner of course). It appeared on "Lamb complilation album Back to the Mine" and also on a compilation called "London Global Connection: Arabesque". YOu can download the original version from iTunes or Amazon, but for this remix you'd have to buy a whole cd... or take it striaght from Youtube. ^_^
