Times Is Hard -- Louden Wainwright III You can hear the song at this NPR page.
Circumstances -- Shemekia Copeland You can hear the song at this NPR page. The original version (I think he wrote it) is by her father Johnny Copeland.
Brother Can You Spare A Dime? -- Tom Waits I like the Thea Gilmore version a lot too.
Hard Time Killing Floor Blues -- Chris Thomas King This is the version from O Brother Where Art Thou? But you can't go wrong with the original by Skip James.
Seven Cent Cotton, Forty Cent Meat I downloaded a version by Jim Lauderdale. Pete Seeger's version is good.
Hard Times of Old England -- The Imagined Village featuring Billy Bragg This is a good version. I'm more familiar with the happy-go-lucky Steeleye Span version, of course.
Hard Times Come Again No More (Nanci Griffith) I like the version with Mark O'Connor and Yo-Yo Ma, and also the version by Darol Anger and Willie Nelson. I also downloaded a version by Emmylou Harris that is good.
Dark Was the Night -- Blind Willie Johnson
