Today's Song: Demonology by Speed to Roam
Today I listened to Will Oldham, aka Bonnie Prince Billy, on a "Guest DJ" show on NPR's All Songs Considered. I loved some of his own music, but one of the songs he played that caught my ear was Demonology by Speed to Roam. Unfortunately, this is one of those cases where he's playing a band so obscure that you have no hope of ever owning the music yourself. Speed to Roam is an unsigned band fronted by Oldham's brother Paul Oldham, and virtually the only information you can find on them on the web involves the aforementioned NPR All Songs Considered Guest DJ show and 2-3 pages where Will Oldham is quoted as listing "Devils and Ghosts" by Speed to Roam as one of his top cd/albums of 2007. In other words, brother Will is apparently the band's biggest fan and best promotor. They have a web site that does not even list this album, that does not list tracks for the three cds it does mention (and two of the three album picture image links are broken), and where you can listen to and download exactly 1 song and 1 song only.
These days, when you can sell music through iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, Lala, Rhapsody, or a dozen other music sites, where you can sell your homemade cds from your own web site or through CD Baby, a band has to really not care about promoting themselves to be this obscure.
They do, however, have a myspace page, and this song is on it. So there. I'm making it my song of the day. The band plays a brand of literate, dirty blues rock / stoner rock. You can hear the song on their myspace page or at the NPR site.
