Today's Song: La Verdad by Juana Molina

Juana Molina was featured on Radiolab podcast this week. Hers is an interesting story: she always wanted to be a singer, but when that didn't seem to be working out, she got into television and within a few years had her own comedy show and was very famous in Argentina and throughout the Spanish-speaking world.

However, she eventually realized that she wasn't doing what she wanted to do. She quit the show at the height of her popularity to become a singer. Many people thought she was being foolish or made fun of her, or thought it was some sort of celebrity vanity pursuit, but she's gone on to create stunningly original music that falls somewhere between folk, ambient, electronica, world, pop, jazz and dance music -- in other words, stuff that is hard to categorize because it breaks rules and crosses boundaries. She makes all the music herself using looped sounds and layered vocals and unusual rhythms. She's compared to Bjork, Beth Orton, and Lisa Germano.
