Today's Song: Canons by Jeremy Enigk
Years ago Gabriel my comic book shop guy lent a cd to me. It was The Return of the Frog Queen by Jeremy Enigk. At the time I didn't realize who he was, but in fact he was the former singer for Sunny Day Real Estate, a Seattle band that I liked very much... a band that was one of the very early "emo" bands, as in alternative rock bands who were inspired by emocore (emotional hardcore punk rock). In fact SDRE is credited as one of the first alternative rock "emo" bands to appear, and that's one reason they're so well remembered.
All of this was before "emo" became a dirty word, of course. ^_^
Jeremy himself went through a spiritual/Christian awakening, left the band and recorded his solo cd. Other members of the band helped form the Foo Fighters, but the various members have reunited on occasion to produce three more cds. They are mostly remembered for their first cd though. I still think their song Seven was one of the greatest songs to come out of Seattle in the 90's, and that's saying quite a bit.
What's also interesting (and something I didn't realize before now) is that Jeremy was part of a group that eventually became Poor Old Lu, a Seattle-based Christian alternative rock group. I have several of their cds. They are one of the best of the Christian indie rock groups from the 90's, and Jeremy sang lead vocals on one of their later songs, so he apparently remained friends with them (his voice appears on another cd as part of a phone message). Their sound was somewhat funk-influenced, but very complex and I can certainly see how what they did had similarities to what Jeremy did.
Anyway, Jeremy has, in the years since, produced two more solo studio cds. The latest one, OK Bear, just came out today. This is a song from that cd:

And here's something from his first solo cd:
