Today's Song: Silver Bride by Amorphis
I think Amorphis is just about the perfect metal band for me. They used to be a death metal band, and they still do the growls once in a while, but not too often. They've done the folk-metal thing and it still informs their music, although it's only a subtle or occasionally-felt influence. They've gone full-on prog metal at one pont in their past, and they still write fairly complex music and aren't afraid to add piano and other things that aren't traditional metal. But mostly for the last three cds they've done straight ahead metal tunes -- a bit proggy, very creative, a bit of growling, a bit of folk, but mostly really really good metal. I'd say mainstream metal, but obviously with the other influences they aren't quite a mainstream band, and anyway when I think of "mainstream" metal I think of crappy metalcore, crappy metal rap/numetal (Limp Bizkit, Creed), and cheesy power metal (Manowar). Amorphis is way cooler than that. But they aren't a death metal band, they aren't a folk metal band, they aren't a prog metal band or a melodic death metal band -- they're one of those bands that ignores genres and boundaries.
Plus they write good and interesting lyrics.
Anyway their new cd is as good as the previous two. They keep this up and they might become my favorite metal band ever.
