miko2Still struggling with my story. I'm hoping to catch up this weekend. Right now I'm at 30,000 words, and I'm supposed to be at 35,000 words by the end of the night. So I'm hoping to write several thousand words today, and several tomorrow.
Nabiki held Octava in her arms. "Okay, witch girl," she said. "I'm ready. Do your thing."
"I've never done this before," Kohana said. "And it's a very complicated spell...."
"Please don't remind me," Nabiki said. "Of course, since we're in the past you have done this before. We know because it worked. Right?"
Kohana nodded. Again she studied the magic circle she'd laid out around Ranma's body, then check it against her chart. She thought she had all the runes right, but it was hard to lay out a magic circle on a muddy hill in the dark during a downpour.
Octava coughed. "Yes, I know," Kohana said. "We're out of time. Well, here goes nothing...."
She held her hands out, palms up, and began to chant. She continued to chant for nearly a minute. Then thin wisps of smoke seemed to arise from the ground. Nabiki stared hard, and could see a very faint glow where the runes had been traced in the mud.
More smoke arose. The circle was glowing now, and filling with a dark grey smoke. The mist swirled around, contained within the circle, and then something strange happened. It seemed as if the very air itself tore open. Within the center of the smoke, a ragged gateway appeared. Through it, one could see another land. The ground was black. It was littered with sharp black rocks. The sky was black. There were no stars.
"A doorway into the land of the dead," Kohana said.
"You did well," Octava said. "Come, Nabiki. Step through."
"Not to question your wisdom," Nabiki said, "but isn't entering the land of the dead while still alive a bad idea?"
"Yes," the bunny replied. "But your healing abilities will protect you. Now, go!"
Nabiki took a deep breath, and stepped through.
