May. 10th, 2010 01:09 pmI feel like I wasted the weekend. This is odd, because the previous weekend I did virtually nothing, whereas this weekend I got out of the house both days and did stuff. But I failed to get in my usual hour a day walk, and it was so nice and sunny that I feel like I wasted an opportunity. Also I spent a lot of money, and that makes me feel a bit guilty and depressed after the fact.
I got paid my anniversary vacation check on Friday. This year it's 3 weeks vacation, so it was a significant amount over and above my regular paycheck. On Saturday I took a sick computer up to Seattle for
miertam to look at. There was a Tai-Pan board of directors meeting going on so I got to hang out with friends a bit. Then I got a new video card that was supposed to fix my computer -- and I bought a whole new computer. It's very powerful (quad core, 2.83 gig, 3 gig memory, Geforce 9800 vid card w/512mb) and was a very good price.
Sunday I met Miertam and
typographer at Fry's, where I spent more money. I picked up Windows 7 for my new computer, a new monitor (20" Compaq widescreen), and a heat sink to try and fix my sick computer (the video card had not solved the problem). Then we ate a late lunch and they took me to see the movie Kick-Ass, which was very violent but quite good.
I spent the evening setting up my new monitor and updating my new computer with Win 7. I also installed City of Heroes on it and patched it. By the end of the evening I was able to test the game out on it (runs beautifully) but at the moment sound does not work (at all). I think I need an updated driver after installing Win 7 (32 bit version), but finding the right driver has not been easy. Realtek has generic drivers but suggests I get one from the MB manufacturer Asus, but they don't seem to have any Win 7 drivers on their web site (or I can't find them). I registered with their forums and left a message.
I haven't even attempted installing the new heat sink/fan on my sick computer, that's a bit involved and I want to see the new computer working with sound first. Even then, it's only a guess that a heat sink will solve the overheating problems, I might have already damaged the CPU.
Of course, while I try to fix one computer and get the new one working properly, the oldest computer that I'm supposedly replacing is still clunking along...
*edit* I downloaded the "generic" realtek driver (despite their words of caution) and it worked fine, so now my new machine has sound. Yay!
I took a look at the sick machine, and I can't even figure out how the heat sink/fan that I bought is supposed to fit in there. So I don't think I'm going to be doing that myself.
