Tempest
Sky didn't feel like coming to see Tempest after all, but Jeff wanted to come and Mike still wanted to come. So I told Jeff to drop by my house, then I went to the store and stopped off at the Dragon King on the way home.
The Dragon King is a Chinese restaurant that opened this weekend on 105th, between Greenwood and Aurora. If you've ever driven by the place, it used to be a laundromate, then it was a Greek restaurant, and they have a large readerboard where the Greek restaurant people put up bad puns involving the word Gyro. But they're out of business, so now maybe we can look forward to bad puns involving the phrase won ton soup? Or maybe not. ^_^
Inside, they still have advertisements up for Marathon and Athenian Beer. You know, Greek beer has always gone with Chinese food, right?
Anyway the new restaurant serves Cantonese, Mandarin, and Sezchuan, and they have a lunch deal for $3.95. I bought Kun Pao Chicken, and it was excellent. I forgot to buy rice however, and didn't have time to make rice because Jeff was supposed to be by soon.
Jeff had left a message that he was leaving and would be by in half an hour... and if he didn't see my car, he'd head straight to Gene and Mike's place. Well, I'd only been gone about half an hour, a little more. I was pretty sure he hadn't been by yet. So I ate my meal, then, when it was 6:55 pm, I called Gene's place. Turns out Jeff had just shown up there a few seconds earlier... he went straight there because he was late.
It hardly mattered though. I thought the concert started at 7 or 7:30, but it started at 8:00 we were some of the first people there.
The concert was fun! Loud -- well, hardly the loudest concert I've ever been to, that would probably be Galactic Cowboys, but anyway --- Tempest tore the place up. They have a new fiddle player, a new guitarist, and a new bassist, all since last year. I don't think I even saw the three they had before that, it's been five or six years since I saw them last. But they were pretty good -- great guitarist, bass player and fiddle player were good enough. The mixing wasn't so good, the bass and guitar drowned out the fiddle and mandolin (we're talking electric fiddle and electric mandolin too, so it really IS the mixer's fault). Drums were quite loud too.
But it was fun. This is the fourth time I've seen Tempest, third time at the Tractor Tavern. First time was with Kristin, another time with Sky and I forget who else, maybe Anthony? Another time they played at Orycon in Portland, Keith was there and I don't remember who else.
Talked with Gene at his and Mike's place afterwards. Gave Jeff his Tom Smith cds back that I've had for forever, and lent him a couple of Tempest cds. He and I each bought a tee shirt and their latest cd at the concert. Then I headed home.
But of course, I'm a night owl, so I watched a few episodes of Blue Seed, made some hamburger helper (bacon cheeseburger -- not a great choice), and made a chocolate cake just because I haven't made a cake in probably five years.
Mike showed me that they have a cheap ($49.00) corner computer desk at Office Max, not the greatest piece of furniture in the world but the price is right. ^_^ I need to get that and put it in my computer den... Tom's old room... then I need some more book shelves, a futon couch, another lamp or two, and a new computer and I have a great computer/library room! ^_^
No writing done the last two days... but I actually saw people and socialized this weekend. What a concept.
