miko2: Ranma disguised as a schoolgirl to fool Ryoga (eli)

I had a giant box waiting for me when I got home tonight. Well, it wasn't giant, but it was waaaay too big for the 2 cds that I'd ordered from Amazon last week. You could have fit five or six large books in it. So I was kind of neverous... but that's all that was in it, my 2 cds and a lot of air-filled packing bubbles.

Whatever.

First cd: Hayseed Dixie -- A Hillbilly AC/DC Tribute. Okay, it's cute. Probably not worth the money, but fun to scare people with.

Second cd: Blue Mountain -- Dog Days. This is an alterna-country band I found out about recently. They're not bad, more alternative rock with some countryish influences. Less country than Maria McKee / Lone Justice, for example.

Speaking of Jeff, Great Big Sea is in town next month. It's on a Tuesday I think, April 24th? At the Showbox. So I won't be able to go, but don't let that stop anyone else, they're a very good Celtic group.

Back to Blue Mountain... they're a 3 piece, 2 guys and a girl. On the back, the girl is in the center, so I figured she was the vocalist, but actually she plays bass and does backup vocals; one of the guys is lead vocalist.

So that's cool... used to be, if a girl was in a rock group, she was always the lead singer, or it was an all-girl group. Nowadays you see a lot of girls who are just musicians in a rock group... but why are they always bassists? I can think of three prominent examples right off the top of my head: Tina Weymouth, who used to be in Talking Heads and is in Tom Tom Club and Gorrillaz now (actually, Gorillaz has a girl from Cibbo Matto too, and obviously she's not the bass player, nor the lead singer... but I digress). There's Janet Napolitano from Concrete Blonde, a really cool band that Sky inexplicably doesn't like, but he likes Frank Black and Happy Hardcore so there you go. ^_^ Well technically Janet's also the lead vocalist, but she plays bass too. And there's Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth, who sings about half their songs. Anyway, I know there are other examples, it's almost common for girls to play bass in alternative rock groups. Why bass though? Why not drums or guitar?
