Ellie wore her Santa earrings to work today. Before I describe them, I must first point out that, on the surface, Ellie appears to be a woman not to different from my mother or grandmother. She is a grandmother, I believe, and is generally very quiet and does her job and doesn't often have anything extraordinairy to say. And her hobby is crafting tiny miniature things, mostly food, for doll houses. She brought some to work, they're very well made, almost scary in fact (a plate full it itty bitty cookies for example where all of the cookies have Santa faces).

At the same time, when she makes statements like, "I'm going to vote for Mrs. Piggy for President, she's my hero and the only person worth voting for," I know that I'm dealing with someone who is actually very different from my mother.

So she wore her Santa earrings today. Her brother made them. She also wore a nice red sweater with a Christmas design on the front, which is very much like something my mother would wear. But the earrings are not something my mother would ever contemplate wearing.

They were figures of Santa, each about 2 inches high. He was potbellied, as you'd expect. And he was naked, except for his hat, held before him in such a way as to cover the part that you'd want to cover on a naked sculpture of Santa.

She said her brother claims it's a self-portrait. In any case, they were startling and highly amusing. I think everyone on the night crew saw them and laughed, but I didn't bother to point them out when two of our Vice Presidents passed through.

Speaking of things to keep hidden under Santa's hat, this stupid joke made me laugh. ^_^

It was Cynthia's birthday today. We had cake and a card to pass around. On the back of a card I drew a hippo, a bird, and two sheep. Hippo Birdy Two Ewes. I wrote the code upside down at the bottom of the card just in case anyone didn't get it, which most wouldn't just seeing the pictures. It's something I stole from a Sandra Boynton card from a long time ago. Anyway, at least two of the people I showed it to didn't even know what an "ewe" was. Sigh.

One of those people was Cornelius. I realize that, because he's black and I'm white, there are a lot of things that we simply don't have in common (and also he's often too young to know stuff that any adult -- meaning someone older than 26 I guess -- should know). But I was still pretty shocked to find out a few weeks ago that he's never even heard of the band Rush. Nor is he familiar with any songs by Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and a few other bands I brought up, although at least he'd heard of them. I kind of wanted to force him to listen to some Rush, but what's the point? He listens to the radio a lot and sings along to pop music from the 50's through the 90's, he has a wide appreciation of music, but when he plays his own cds they're mostly rap, hip hop, soul, etc. He does like BB King, but he doesn't follow other blues artists. I don't think he'd like Rush that much, although he probably wouldn't hate it, it's just not his type of music.

But I thought everyone knew what an ewe was. Oh well.

I watched a dvd of Inu-Yasha last night, as I said. I have a lot of them that I haven't watched yet, so I thought I'd try and work my way through them. Today I stopped in at my comic shop, and there were two new Inu-Yasha dvds out. Hmmm. It seems I'm not gaining ground here...
