Because I work at a transportation company, sometimes we get "freebies" that come from damaged freight that we couldn't deliver and had to pay for. Salvage, in other words.

Sometimes it's food. In my five years at my current job, we've had things like boxes of a very good trail mix, gummy worms and various other gummy type candy, yummy fruit pies, and oddball things like a giant bag of instant refried beans (which I think I still have). Once upon a time we shipped Tim's Cascade potato chips, and that was wonderful when some of their freight wound up in salvage. But we don't ship for them anymore -- instead we ship Robert's American Gourmet, and their freight seems to get damaged on a semi-regular basis, which usually indicates that they don't assemble their pallets very well. What they ship are "health food" snacks, which run the gamut from edible but not overly tasty to "do people really eat this stuff? On purpose?". The not-really-cheese-puff things like Pirate Booty (that's what they call it) and Smart Puffs and Tings are of the edible variety. Things like their sour cream and onion flavored soy chips and their coffee-chocolate flavored health food crisp bar definitely fall into the "what were they thinking?" category.

Anyway today was something new. It was a big box full of candy -- smarties to be exact. You know smarties, they come wrapped in a cellophane roll and are multi-colored and tart and basically sugar candy. I've always liked them, but I guess not many others do because this box had been sitting out for the day crew and it was still nearly full. I ate more than I should have, and I placed a couple of handfuls in my desk drawer for another day, and at the end of the night the box was still nearly full, so I grabbed a plastic bag and stuffed several handfuls into it to bring to writer's night on Saturday, just in case there's someone else in the world besides me that likes that sort of thing.

One thing that I saw at Wonderworld on Sunday and coveted but didn't buy was a large hardcover book called "The Art of Usagi Yojimbo". It was $40, which is one of the reasons I didn't buy it. It's also a big book of mosty black and white are from the comic, although it contains a lot of full-page illos that weren't part of the comic, and color cover paintings too. It was really beautiful, in the way that nice art books always are. But in the end I know I don't need it. I have art books aplenty that I almost never look at. I have WAY too much stuff -- books I'll never read (or at least, never read again), cds that I don't have time to listen to, manga that I'll probably never read again, comics that I may never even manage to sort properly. Bleah. I even have multiple times the clothing I really need. What do I need more stuff for? I'm afraid of ever having to move because of all the junk I own.
