It's Squeaky Bum Time!

miko2One of the things I heard on NPR yesterday (actually on BBC Radio) was a conversation about a lot of slang words that had been added to a dictionary this year. Many of them were derogatory words used to describe people you didn't like -- and quite a few of those managed to sound vulgar even when you didn't exactly know what the meaning was. For example, "wangster" or perhaps "wankster", I wasn't sure of the spelling, but it was used to describe someone who pretended to be a gangster but wasn't.
My favorite though was "squeaky bum time", which was used to describe the period, usually late in the season or late in a game, when football (soccer) fans would grow tense and nervous about their teams. ^_^
Sandy at work listens to right wing radio and believes everything she hears. She was a big Dino Rossi supporter, even volunteered for his campaign. So when he conceded this week I asked her if she'd heard the news, and she went off on a rant about how Christine Gregoire would "get hers" because karma always comes back to bite people who lie and cheat and steal and are all around evil. I just let her rant, you can't argue with people like that. But then she asked me, "You know why he conceded don't you?" And I said sure, because the court defeat was so complete that he stood little chance of having it reversed by a higher court. And she said no, it was because Gregoire "owned" the judges and so he had no chance of winning. And I just had to laugh in her face at that point.
Yesterday she wasn't at work. We heard that her house had "burned down" although later when we got more information it turned out that it was just a fire in the kitchen, but still, there's smoke damage throughout the house and she'd just remodelled her kitchen too. She always seems to have the worst luck. Her purse was in the kitchen with her car keys and cell phone and everything, so she lost all of that. What a mess. I'm glad it wasn't the whole house though, and nobody got hurt.
