miko2I listened to my Hollies greatest hits collection today. I got that in the mail, and also a couple of other neat cds... Stephen Stills cd with "Love The One You're With" on it was another.
Anyway the Hollies one is a double-disc set with 47 songs on it. I didn't manage to get through both cds tonight, but it was fun. They have a few big hits that I'm very familiar with: Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress, Bus Stop, Carrie Anne, All I Need Is The Air That I Breathe, He Ain't Heavy (He's My Brother). The rest of the disc is chock full of minor hits and things that were never hits in the US but possibly in the UK (where the band was from) or in other countries. A lot of sixties and seventies pop rock, most of it pretty good.
One song kind of annoyed me... "The Midas Touch In Reverse" about a man who has bad luck (everything he touches turns to dust... although I'm not sure they mean that literally). Anyway the chorus is something like, "He's like King Midas, only with a curse..." My first thought was, do these guys not even know how the story of King Midas goes? He DID have a curse! Everything he touched turned to gold! his wife! His children! His dog! His fluffy bath towel! His double-bacon cheesburger!.
Well, you get the idea.
There was another song on there that had a goofy name, "The Day That Curly Billy Shot Down Crazy Sam McGee". Aside from some rather ridiculous lyrics, this song had a very cool chorus and I liked it a lot... but it was funny because right up to the chorus it sounds almost exactly like "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress" only with completely different lyrics. Hmm, I guess the song was such a big hit for them that they had to try it again?
This is a very complete two-disc collection, and surprisingly (I was surprised at least) it includes one new track, recorded in 2003 by the current Hollies lineup. I mean, I had no idea they were still around. ^_^
