miko2: Ranma disguised as a schoolgirl to fool Ryoga (gally)

Since I didn't go to writer's night I decided to waste more time on virtual shopping and virtual cosplay.

Yes it's another Elegant Gothic Lolita outfit, (combined with oversized stompy anime boots, which is not very EGL-like). This sort of look is described pretty well in an article for an online goth magazine called Morbid Outlook. Basically, "Lolita" refers to, among other things, a strange fashion trend in Japan where women (and sometimes men as well) dress up in elaborate costumes with a very childish/girlish/doll-like bent, often very Victorian as well... or as the Morbid Outlook article puts it, "a sort of French Maid meets Alice in Wonderland style". These women dress up on the weekends and walk about town or hang out together and pose for pictures. If you've seen the elaborate outfits that Sakura wears in Cardcaptor Sakura, some of them are very Lolita-ish (as well as other anime shows I could name).

Mind you, there is obviously a strong current that runs through Japanese culture that likes to depict women as child-like and sexual at one and the same time, but we're not going to get into that now. Whatever else might be implied by this style, it produces some amazingly elaborate and undeniably cute costumes. As for Elegant Gothic Lolita, it's a subset of the Lolita trend with a dark/gothic bent.

There are a lot of goth stores in Second Life, but only a few that cater to the ultra-cute EGL look. There was a three-story insane asylum (with some very spooky interiors, including padded rooms, wire cages, and blood-spattered walls) that had a small shop with a lot of EGL stuff. I bought the above outfit from there, and also the one I posted earlier, and a few more including two Cardcaptor Sakura outfits (her pink dress outfit and her pink & black kitty outfit). At another place I found a couple of things that kinda fit the EGL idea, and the third place is one of my favorite stores in Second Life, a place called Curious Kitties that is geared towards anime-ish clothing and items, including massively oversized boots, wild anime hair, and some outfits that by their anime nature come close to the Lolita/Gothic Lolita look. They're heavily into "cute", with a large helping of spikes and fuzzy stuff.

Relaxing in my house in the dark. Gotta love the purple feathered pigtails and massive hairpins, and the oversized fuzzy boots -- that's the kind of thing Curious Kitties makes.

Posing in a pool of water, I guess. There was a "pose ball" here that you clicked on to assume whatever pose was scripted for it... which turned out to be a rather sexy, provacative one. Probably I was supposed to have a swimsuit on.

Gotta love those furry boots.

Tom insisted that if I was going to fly around (everyone can fly in Second Life), that I should have wings. I have a folder stuffed with wings that I picked up for free when I first joined the game... we sorted through them and discovered that this pair was a perfect match for the orchid Lolita dress....

I went on a long shopping spree with Tom looking over my shoulder and offering advice and comments. The hair I have here also comes from Curious Kitties. At another place I picked out this red salsa dress. Tom wanted me to buy a blue ball gown, he thought I had too many short dresses and skirts already, but I gotta go with what I like. After that, I had to find some sexy shoes to match, which took me a while, and then I had to find some red underwear. When I was done I purchased some dance scripts and went dancing.

A darker skin seemed more appropriate for this look, instead of the pale white goth skin I had on earlier.

Like I said... unbearably cute. ^_^

Tom picked up on something about Second Life that others have commented on... a good graphic designer could do very well in this game designing clothing for men... military outfits, formal wear, whatever. The fact is, probably more than 95% of all the clothing and accessories offered in the game is for female avatars... finding good clothing for male avatars is very very difficult.

There are some good places for furry avatars though. I visited one of them yesterday, but didn't purchase anything. But when it comes to furry avatars it's pretty easy to get male as well as female versions. So far I only have the female panda avatar which I haven't used in a while... if I ever see a good raccoon avatar I'll probably pick it up, but of course what you mostly see is various cats, wolves, and equines.
