I spent an inordinant amount of time last night creating a skirt that doesn't really exist. I'm talking about Second Life... and up until now I've created dozens of tee shirts, and wanted to graduate to something harder. In the end, I was very pleased with myself and also a little bit disappointed in that it didn't come out as good as I really wanted. But it's the most complicated thing I've made in the game so far, and I feel like I accomplished something, instead of just goofing off playing the game.

I was looking at furry avs again last night. I've decided that I needed a male furry self too, on the off chance that I acutally get my act together and buy whatever programs I need and learn how to be a virtual DJ. You know, just so I don't confuse people if they hear my voice. So some furry wolf guy starts talking to me, and I said I'd checked out Dwellget and Luskwood and Jakkal's AVs, and he asked if I'd checked out Furnation, and of course I've been there but I couldn't find where the mall was. So he shows me how to get there.

When you teleport in to the Furnation site in Second Life, you're right in front of a huge Stargate-like gate. It looks cool, but it apparently has no function. You can walk through it... and you're on the other side. Woo.

On the other side is a small standing stone, like a headstone. I was told to click on it, so I did, and suddenly a menu popped up with dozens of destinations, including "skymall". I selected that, and a smaller stone appeared, which my friend called a "gemstone". I had to click on that, and then suddenly teleporter rings formed around me and I was shooting far up into the air, eventually to land at the Furnation Sky Mall, which has four levels of stuff. Well, two levels of stuff and two levels of empty vendor space, but whatever.

There was a lot of stuff there, more avatars from various furry creators plus other things. I found some things to buy. But I was wondering... how smart is it to build a mall, which in theory exists to attract lots of people who then buy your stuff... and then hide it so far up in the sky that nobody knows it's there, and make the method of getting there secret with no signs explaining which stone you need to click on? It was very odd... "Welcome to our secret mall that only insiders know about!"

I was listening to a funeral director on NPR today, and I started thinking... are there any mortuaries or graveyards in Second Life? You have malls, resorts, beaches, game centers, casinos, dance clubs, wedding chapels, churches, sacred groves, baby stores. Everything about life is celebrated in this virtual world, but of course nobody celebrates death or wants to recreate it virtually. Mind you, there are a lot of goth/vampyre themed places around, so I'm sure there are some crypts or a graveyard somewhere. But no funeral home. No hospital, either, although I've visited a very disturbing insane asylum (where they sold goth clothing, naturally). I was wondering, what would people think if you decided to build and run a funeral home in-game? Would people eventually hire you to perform services in rememberance of friends who had passed on, or left the game? Would people want to place names on tombstones in your graveyard? Would anybody actually want to simulate a funeral?

That got me thinking about something else... in the game, if you don't have land there are places where you can rent an apartment and have some space to call your home, place some furniture in, etc. Given the large gothic/vampire scene, I started to wonder, could you build a graveyard and then rent out coffins or mausoleums for people to sleep in? Apartments for the undead?

Somehow, I think that would work.

In any case tonight I made some more tee shirts, including several Hedwig and the Angry Inch tee shirts. I still want to do some Chuck Melville tee shirts, at least a Mr. Cow, but I'll need to get good image files from him to work from. And I want to maybe make some tee shirts or posters of some of Sky's artwork if he'll let me, or maybe Jennifer if she doesn't mind. Actually I need to design a logo of some sort for my little Second Life store, and I was thinking to ask Jennifer if she would do it and for how much... something simple. Right now I've been calling my company "Magical Oz Designs" since my first character had the name of Oz... I was thinking it might be fun to draw a gothic Dorothy and use that for my logo. Well anyway, lots of ideas, never enough time to do them all.

Today I got the Hedwig original cast recording. I was surprised... I think I like some of their versions better than the movie soundtrack. Less polish, but more raw and energetic.
