Feb. 12th, 2006 06:40 pmAside from unpacking a half dozen boxes and putting books onto shelves, I failed to go anywhere or do anything today.
What I did instead was play internet DJ. First of all, I played with SAM3 a bit and got a good idea of how it worked, as far as queueing songs and playing them. Later I showed up at the little practice dancefloor in Prometheus (in SL) and people were there partying. The DJ kept complaining that he'd been at it for five hours and wanted someone else to take over. I said several times that if someone could tell me what to do, I wanted to try it out, but this generally got me no responses at all. One other person wanted to try and was able to finally get Winamp/Shoutcast working, and she DJ'd for a while.
When she was done she said I could go at it, but nobody had provided me with the stream address or password or told me how to enter them to get everything working. One person offered to help, but when he heard I was using SAM3 and not Winamp/Shoutcast, he said he couldn't help me. Another person said the encoding was the same on both of them, then disappeared without explaining further. Finally I offered to download Winamp (which I did) but soon realized that I still needed to download Shoutcast (I had thought it was bundled, but just the ability to listen to Shoutcast was included with Winamp). At this point I found out that Shoutcast requires Winamp 2 and doesn't work with Winamp 3. Grrr. But at least the guy gave me the stream address and password, so after everyone else had left I went back to playing with SAM3.
After about an hour of working on it and reading help docs, I figured out what I needed and was able to stream music from my computer. ^_^ I had SAM3 on one computer and was playing SL on the other, so by turning off the speakers to the first computer I was able to know for certain that my music was streaming properly when it played on the second computer.
Nobody else came to listen to me, for the most part, but I continued to play music and play with the controls, learning what they could do. It's possible others in SL have been listening to me, they only need to know the stream address to listen in. I don't have a microphone yet so there's no DJ voice, just music, but I'm having fun. ^_^
