miko2So, having a little extra time this morning, I decided to completely waste it by reading something at the Second Life forums. I stumbled across a thread about how some designer of the twin towers in New York said that it was impossible for the towers to collapse from a 747 impact in the way that they did (Uh... gee... looked pretty possible to me on my television screen... anyway...) and therefore this indicated that 9/11 was really a big conspiracy by the Bush administration to grab power.
Not that Bush didn't take the opportunity to grab power, of course. But the implication that the collapse of the two towers was by necessity a controlled implosion plotted by the government, and not the result of the impact of two very large planes full of aircraft fuel that ignited massive and very hot fires, is... how to put this as delicately as possible... among the stupidest conspiracy theories I have ever heard in my life?
(Well... pretty much all conspiracy theories are blatantly stupid... witness one of my coworkers who tried to tell me that on 9/11 the Pentagon wasn't really hit by an airplane, that was a coverup story, it was really hit by a missile or something... you can tell from pictures of the impact... nevermind the people that died in the supposed plane crash, I'm sure all of that was made up too... for some reason that will never actually become clear to me....).
You know, an expert tells me his building couldn't have collapsed the way it did, I come to the conclusion that he is simply wrong, that he didn't take every concievable calculation into consideration, that it's nearly impossible to prevent a 100-story building from collapsing when you have massive strucutural damage and fires of such intense heat weakening the structure further. I don't necessarily come to the conclusion that, logically, the planes had nothing to do with the collapse, something else must have brought them down, it must have been a government plot all along.
And I'm sure there are people out there who are quite convinced that space aliens caused 9/11. :p
Well anyway, I wasted fifteen minutes of my life reading that stupidity, and now I've wasted some more talking about it. And some of yours if you're reading this. ^_^
Among the other useless things I read on the forums was the suggestion that the Dept of Homeland Security is in a furry mood. Or something.
This lead to a lot of people getting nostalgic about Ranger Rick, Smokey the Bear, etc... and also lead the conspiracy types to compare a web site using cute (intended to be cute anyway) animals to teach kids about safety and being prepared to the Hitler Youth program... because everything your government does is evil and calculated and nobody in government could ever possibly be trying to actually help you in any way... I guess the guy at the US Post Office who fixed my change of address yesterday wasn't really being helpful, he was part of some big plot to get me....
