I'm still making my way through the Azumanga Daioh series. I'm through volume 4 now, which means the cast are about to graduate to their third year of High School (in Japan 3rd year = Senior year).

Something I've noticed much more the second time through the series (perhaps because I was paying attention and trying to figure out what I liked about the series and what it might be about the series that didn't appeal to [livejournal.com profile] dolphinchatter) is that, really, the series never developes much of a plot. You learn more about the characters, and they do things, but rarely is any kind of plot involved. It tends to be more slice-of-life, with an emphasis on character development and short comedy sketches strung together. After all, the original manga was done as six-panels-per-page comics with some sort of joke at the end of each page, so the anime series sort of follows that structure.

It makes me think of Kurt Vonnegut, and how some of his novels are written in very short chapters where each chapter is a self-contained joke or comedy sketch. I always thought that was an interesting way to structure a story. I've always wanted to try to write something that way myself, just as a challenge. My current Ian story was going to be written like that, but as usual when it came to writing the story I abandoned that approach. But I still want to write something like that someday -- a series of jokes or sketches that also serve as scenes or chapters in a larger story.

Top Five Songs Stuck In My Head This Week:

5. Thirteen by Johnny Cash (kind of a theme for my new character Kismet I think -- "Bad luck wind been blowing at my back -- I pray that you don't look at me, I pray I don't look back")
4. Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm by The Crash Test Dummies (actually I've had Superman's Song and God Shuffled His Feet stuck in my head as well. "Once there was this kid who got into an accident and couldn't come to school, but when he finally came back, his hair had turned from black into bright white".)
3. Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck by Demon Hunter (possibly a Kismet theme too. "You want the good life, you break your back. You snap your fingers, you snap your neck...")
2. Eve Stole The Apple by Abigail Washburn (I've been playing her cd constantly since I got it in early December. Kristin is right, her stuff is perfect Firefly music. "Like a tolling bell in its final hour, I'll make a sound, oh Lord I'll make one sound...")
1. Fruits Candy (Cardcaptor Sakura End Theme) (Altough currently I also have the opening theme to Azumanga Daioh stuck in my head -- Lu, la lu, la lu....)

Honorable mention to Fire Snakes by Laura Viers ^_^ "I'll dress up your wounds, wash off the salt, freshen the blooms at your mud-crusted alter..."
