Last night I hung out with two friends in SL, and we wound up talking about music. One friend was using her server to stream music and was treating us to a lot of Celtic folk and folk-rock. She played a version of Rogues In A Nation, I think by Silly Wizard, and I said that was one of my favorite songs by Steeleye Span. She played two versions of Queen of Argyle, by Silly Wizard and by Wolfstone. I said my favorite version was by Tempest, and I talked about the night Tom and I went to see Old Blind Dogs when Wolfstone was playing simultaneously three blocks away in Ballard (possibly the worst scheduling job I've ever encountered). She's a fan of both groups and has seen both in concert, so she understood perfectly. She also played Jethro Tull's version of John Barleycorn, and was surprised when I told her I had as many as a dozen versions of that song (truthfully, I have 3 by Steeleye Span, 1 by Fairport Convention, 1 by Traffic, 1 by Tull, 1 by Goldenbough, and probably a couple of others somewhere... 7-10 versions I suppose).

Anyway all of this talk lead her to turning over the music stream to our other friend so she could play us some Blind Guardian and Nightwish and a few other things. I like Blind Guardian, but had never heard Nightwish before. They're very good, operatic Finish metal with both male and female vocals. Very cool.

I had to open up SAM3 (dj broadcasting software) in order to help her install it -- she'd decided to switch to it from shoutcast -- and then since I'd touched the program it went into it's routine of opening itself up every 20 minutes or so and playing it's "you really should register me now" message. Only I'd long ago switched the message with a Laura Viers song, but anyway, it's still annoying that it turns itself on and I have to open it up and shut it down again. So I decided it was time to pay the piper and register, because it's a good program and I want to keep it.

This lead to a very frustrating time trying to install the non-demo version of the program, which would refuse to overwrite the demo version, and when I de-installed the demo version it would still be there and would prevent the new version from installing. I tried to physically delete the demo folders and was told that they were "in use" and couldn't be deleted. I assume that was somehow related to it's "start myself up and remind the user to register" routine or something, and was also why the non-demo version would refuse to overwrite files... anyway I was able to reboot and then trash the old files and finally got a clean install of the non-demo program.

Then I streamed some of my own music. My friend said, for the tenth time that evening and the thousandth time in the last six months, "Oh, you need to share that! Oh, I love that, can I have a copy?" And I reminded her for the thousandth time, her upload system to her computer did not work, so I couldn't share anything.

So, she finally fixed that, and I was able to ftp a few things.

All of this also lead me to realize that I only had three Tempest cds ripped to my hard drive. I went looking and dug up five more. I ripped four of these, but the fifth one, their 10th Anniversary Live Compilation, had no disc inside the case. I have no idea where that might be after having moved. Well, I have some faint ideas but I dunno if I'll be able to find it.

I went to their web site and realized that there was another cd of theirs around somewhere, which I finally managed to locate. And I realized they have a brand new cd out, I'll have to pick that up. ^_^ And maybe some Nightwish too.
