I have a broadband connection.

My landlord wasn't home and I had not yet asked for written permission to drill a hole into my computer room, so they couldn't do that... so they used the old cable lines, which means that my modem is in the livingroom near the front door. Hmm. Well I guess I can string a cable to my router from there.

The install guy said that my router should have a firewall and that I can just plug things in and go. But I'd really prefer to drag Mike over here and abuse my friendship with him again by deferring to his expertise on everything. Only I haven't stocked up on Mountain Dew lately. I also haven't bought Christmas presents. For anyone. Except Mike, actually. And Tom.

Anyway, my house is a mess and I'm tired from staying up too late. Bleah. But I remembered what I really want most -- Win XP Pro. Or Win 2k. I hate having to run Win 98 on all my machines.

In other news, I played EQ again. And again.

So I went to CompUSA and spent money that I didn't necessarily have. It was a light paycheck this week, I've been leaving work eary every night because I get done before midnight, and I also skipped a day when I couldn't get a rental.

Anyway. Since they installed the broadband modem in the front room, I needed a long cable to run to my computer room. 50 feet didn't seem like enough, so I bought the 100 foot cable. That was kind of expensive. Then I bought black and color ink for my printer. That's expensive too. And some more colored jewel cd cases. And a copy of Everquest Gold Edition, which is a massive gold metal box that comes with EQ and all four expansions, all for $69.00. That was expensive too. But I'm an addict and I simply MUST dual EQ as soon as possible, so it was an absolute neceessity. Right?

Of course.

Oh yeah, a 25 foot cable to hook up Tom's computer. Although technically I should have made him buy his own.

And then I forgot the power strip, which I need for the modem and lamp when I get everything assembled... which I can't right now because when I pulled the couch and lamp table out, I had to clean behind them and the heater had fallen off the wall and I can't put it back myself, need someone else to hold it up while I screw it back in, assuming the screws will hold, and when it's back in place the cable modem power plug thing won't fit anymore so as you can see I need a power strip.

So I stopped at Fred Meyers and bought one. And some jeans. And some pop. And some chips.

And I stopped at Ivar's for dinner. Only I forgot the cold pizza in the fridge... oh well, I was in the mood for cajun fish.

So the only question is, should I just plug in my cable modem and go, as the install guy advised? Hmm... couldn't get ahold of Mike or Sky. I didn't try Jeff. I don't think I can wait much longer, and it sounded easy to set up, which it probably isn't really...

(addendum)

Well... if I had a Netgear Router I guess it would have a built-in firewall, but I have a Netgear Hub and I guess it doesn't have a firewall..l as far as I can tell. So I got my cable all strung up from the modem to the hub but I didn't connect it.

I suppose I have to buy a firewall tomorrow. Mike will let me know. ^_^

In other news, Tom went to work last night (11 pm graveyard shift) and I haven't seen him since. He might have slept at his parent's place. He might have gone gaming with his friends. He might have come home and slept for a few hours and then left before 11 am. I don't really tell him where I'm going, and he doesn't really tell me where he's going, but I kind of wonder what's up. He was up early on Friday and after a graveyard shift I would have expected him to come back home and get a lot of sleep.
