It's Saturday. I goofed off and didn't get out early enough to run my errands, none of which are vital anyway. I *did* manage to drive to the store and over to Silver Platters, which also wasn't vital but whatever, I bought 3 cds. ^_^

From the Left-Handed calendar assembled by someone who hates lefthanders:

"Lefty forefather Benjamin Franklin was an awkward child and was beaten up and taunted by his schoolmates."

Thankfully for our country's posterity, our great forefather somehow managed to overcome his terrible handicap.

"Classic tarot cards show depictions of Justice as right-handed and the Devil as left-handed."

But what about the Hello Kitty tarot deck? That's the one that matters, yes?

"Scottish superstition states that stepping into a house with the left foot brings evil and bad luck into the house. This is the basis for the 'first footing' custom."

Of course, if you're visiting your enemy then by all means, left foot first...

"It is considered bad luck to pass wine with the left hand."

...but even worse luck to refuse to pass the wine at all.

"Studies show that lefties are more likely than righties to be vegetarians."

Is there a reason for this, or is it just a group of stupid pointless studies? Whatever, I don't think it applies to me! Confirmed omnivore!

"In the United States, the right hand is held up in courst of law when being sworn in under oath."

Like we don't know this? I suppose there are some people in the world that have yet to witness a Hollywood coutroom drama movie or television series... in the jungles of East Timor maybe?

"Moroccans believe that lefties are cursed or associated with the devil."

So far it appears that everyone else agrees with them.

"Irish lore states that if you are traveling on a journey and encounter three magpies on your left, bad luck will befall you. Two magpies on your right will bring good luck, and a cuckoo on the right will bring an entire year of good luck."

Unfortunately you can't avoid encountering turkeys on either hand.

"Ancient Aztec healers were specific about which hand administered medicine for particular ailments. Kidney medication was always administered with the left hand."

Wow. That's actually not a negative comment. Not that I'd want to put my trust in an ancient Aztec healer, mind you.

"Only one of the Dionne quintuplets was a lefty -- Marie."

Yay for Marie. Who are the Dionne quints again?

"Some medical studies show that lefties are more affected by painkillers and tranquilizers than right-handers."

I'm not a lefty doc -- better make it a double!

"In Chinese writing, words are written in vertical columns from right to left, which indicates a slightly left-handed preference."

How nice of the Chinese. ^_^

Let's see... some of these are just too boring to fully quote. Marcello Rios was a lefty tennis player with a bad temper. Yay. Celine Dion, Judy Garland, and Carly Simon are lefties. So are Ted Koppel, Forrest Sawyer, and Edward R. Murrow. And baseball player "Lefty" Gomez, who was also Hispanic, according to their little write-up of his career. You'd have never guessed those two facts from his name, huh? Oh, and by the way, the term "Southpaw" was supposedly coined by Chicago sportswriters in the 1890's because left-handed pitchers, when facing home plate, had their pitching arms on the side of town that was nicknamed "The South Side".

Mind you, they don't explain why this part of town was called "The South Side"...

Plus a note on left handed artist LeRoy Neiman who used to contribute to Playboy (yay) and some info on Left Hand and Tabernash Brewing Co. in Longmont, CO. I haven't checked out the link.

Okay, now I have... and it doesn't work. Why does this not surprise me? Probably making beer with your left hand brings bad luck or something.

Oh... and what do George Burns, George H.W. Bush, and George Michael have in common? Three guesses!

They're all white!

They're all named George!

No... wait! None of them have ever been involved in a messy war in Iraq!

Well... two out of three ain't bad.
