Writing updates and other stuff
Nov. 6th, 2003 03:18 amSo I listen to the radio all night while I work, and what I usually listen to is NPR. Even the stupid talking head stuff usually. And they always go to BBS news at 10, and it includes "the sport" which is a report on all of the sporting events in the world that I could care less about, like European football and cricket. Listening to a report on a cricket match is only slightly less incomprehensible than listening to a Latvian Opera. Or at least I imagine it so.
But the fun part of listening to British news is how they pronounce things. I mean, they're supposed to be the source of the English language, but they often pronounce words in ways that are just plain WRONG! I mean really. Why can't everyone speak normal English like me anyway?
Today part of their news coverage was about Gary Leon Ridgeway (the Green River Killer) pleading guilty to 48 murders. They described him as "a long time painter at a Hauling Firm". Hauling Firm? Hauling Firm? I work at a Trucking Company. I've worked in transportation for 18 years. I've never heard ANYONE call such a company a "Hauling Firm".
And anyway Ridgeway was a painter at Kenworth Truck, which is a company that MAKES trucks. "Hauling Firms" buy their trucks and use them to haul freight. Some "Hauling Firms" (ours in particular) haul the various truck parts about FOR Kenworth, so that they can build their trucks.
So Kenworth Truck is not a "Hauling Firm". What I think they wanted to say was that Ridgeway worked at a "Lorry Manufacturing Firm".
Pretty sure anyway.
The other thing that I thought was funny (and I admit I have a sick sense of humor) was that I heard several reports that said Ridgeway had explained to prosecutors the plan that he used to carry out his crimes. I don't know about you, but the way they said this made it sound like some elaborate, step by step plan. But the next part of the report revealed that his plan was "To kill as many prostutes as I possibly could."
Um... this is what you call a plan? And even beyond that... this is surprising news? This is something that we didn't know about the Green River Killer fifteen years ago?
So anyway... yeah.
So... writing report. I've written about one scene a day on Muyami Academy all week so far. Which does not get me anywhere on my Tai-Pan stories, but satisfies some primal urge inside of me. You see, Muyami Academy is a massive open-ended story and is thus pretty easy to write. And I have things that I need to accomplish with that story. Back in Chapter 4 I introduced a plot that will eventually result in a demon being unleashed and temporarily taking over the school... and now I'm up to Chapter 15 after many years of writing (and not writing to be completely honest), and my demon is about to actually be unleashed! And mind you, my chapters are pretty massive, so it's taken a long time to get to this point, and it's going to take even longer to get all the way through to the point where the heroes defeat him. That might take me until chapter 18 or so.
