Aug. 18th, 2006 10:46 amYesterday as I was leaving for work I heard a dripping sound coming from the kitchen. For a moment I wondered if the sink faucet was not fully shut off, but then I realized that water was dripping down from the corner of the cabinet onto the end of the countertop, all over my stack of bills and mail. I got a bucket to catch the water, moved the mail and papers out of the way, and let the Apartment Manager know.
I don't know what it is about people living above me who find it impossible to avoid flooding their apartments. I've never flooded an apartment no matter where I lived. Anyway this person above me now has been there less than a week, and has already shown a tendency to make noise in the morning right above me that makes it hard to stay asleep. When her army of friends were moving her in earlier in the week, one of them saw me coming back from a walk and asked if I "had a lot of wild parties". When I said no, he said, "Darn, my ex-wife is moving in upstairs", and then laughed.
I'm supposed to be walking at least 1 hour a day, 2 hours if I can. My best time for doing this is in the morning, especially this week because I'm on a later schedule covering for someone who's missing, so I work at 2:30 pm and get off at 11 pm. I don't really need to be walking around at midnight anywhere I think. Yesterday I went walking around the tennis courts, around and around and around, for about 25 minutes. Later I bought a watch so I could keep track of how long I'd been walking -- for the last couple of years I haven't had a working watch, although I still own two that I just need to put new batteries in. But this one is a pocket watch, I decided I wanted one of those, and it was fairly cheap and looks nice.
I've also taken to walking on the path beside the railroad tracks behind our warehouse on my breaks at work. There's a gravel path that begins right where our property is and runs along the tracks for I have no idea how far. There's a lot of broken glass and trash where it begins, but it's a nice place to walk. I can make it past the end of our property and halfway past the next piece of property (which I think is the UPS Supply Chain lot?) and back in 15 minutes. Walking for only 15 minutes at a time doesn't meet the definition of good aerobic exercise that I was given (at least 25 minutes of continous activity) but at my level of don't-exercise-at-all-ness, I think it helps quite a bit anyway. But obviously getting in an hour of walking or exercise in the morning is my best option.
The tennis court where I live is covered in broken glass, trash, and rocks too. I wouldn't reccomend playing tennis there. I was wondering why the grounds crew never cleans it up, but then I realized, it's not actually a part of the complex even though it's in the very center of the complex. There's a short gravel road and parking area next to it accesible from the main road, and a sign that says it belongs to the city and is open to the public. Which means nobody actually maintains it, I suppose.
I need to find a place that I can walk to, instead of just walking around in circles. On the plus side, my apartments have an exercise center that I haven't used yet, but when the weather's bad I could go there.
I don't have access to my e-mail right now, since my main computer is down. I could set up another computer to access it, but I'm kind of philosophically opposed to reading e-mail from multiple computers, I like to have it all in one place. I probably need to do a complete reinstall on a new hard drive for my computer, which means figuring out which of my copies of WinXP goes with this computer, and getting a new hard drive. When I was at Frye's a couple of days ago they had 200 gig hard drives for $109, and 500 gig hard drives were for sale. 500 gigs -- yeesh.
