Weird little tidbit
Jan. 7th, 2007 09:07 pmWhat is the song Garden Party about?
I went to the Tai-Pan work party Saturday. I had to stop and get new tabs for my car on the way, and buy gas, and I left late, and I was pretty happy to arrive only 1 hour later than I was supposed to. I managed to get some stuff done at the party, wrote two more Bottles shaggy dog short shorts. Gene said that since I overshot my target of three stories I now had to write six. Not so sure about that one.
David and I kept track of the Seahawks game on our laptops. I would much rather have seen the game, but oh well. I almost decided to skip the whole meeting because I wanted to watch the game, but I'm glad I didn't.
As I left, the game was in the final minutes. I listened to it on the radio in the car. As I approached I-5 on 50th, the game ended. On the spur of the moment, I decided to bypass I-5 and any potential traffic jams resulting from the end of the game, and instead spend some time at Half-Price Books, which I'd been wanting to do for a few weeks anyway.
I picked up a handful of cds from their bargain bin. I bought two cheap manga (Ai Love You #3 and Boy Princess... the former is an old series from Ken Akamatsu, the creator of Love Hina and my current favorite manga, Negima!... the latter is a manwah (Korean manga) that is pretty much exactly what it sounds like, a boy disguised as a princess... leading to a bishonen shojo love story). I also found two large stacks of the game City of Villians. These were sealed and obviously not used, but castoffs from someone's overstocked warehouse. I had never picked the game up, but since I'd just reactivated my game account, I bought a copy of CoV for only $9.95. Cool beans!
The cds I got were mostly collections. I got a 2-CD set called "Tossin' and Turnin'" for $3. It contains songs like Chapel of Love, Surf City, Duke of Earl, Surfer Girl, Under the Boardwalk, and of course the title track. Bunch of 60's pop rock, in other words... some I already had, some I didn't own yet.
Another $1 CD was "Mojo Music Guide Vol 4: Blues Power" which contained a bunch of original blues tunes that have been covered at a later point by famous rock acts. Great stuff! Boom Boom by John Lee Hooker, I Ain't Got You by Jimmy Read, Who Do You Love? by Bo Diddly, Where Did You Sleep Last Night? by Lead Belly, John the Revelator by Son House, Let's Get Funky by Hound Dog Taylor and the House Rockers, Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters, Spoonful by Howlin' Wolf. Again, some stuff I had, some really good stuff that I didn't own yet.
Another $2 CD was "Generation of Folk Vol 4: Troubadours". This is mostly soft-rock hits from the 70's, with some 80's and 90's stuff. American Pie by Don McLean, Wild World by Cat Stevens, On and On by Stephen Bishop, Here Comes The Sun by Richie Havens, I'm Easy by Keith Carradine, etc.
The last one, another $1 CD, was Dick Clark's All Time HIts Vol 3. This happens to be an excellent collection of very hard rock from the 60's and 70's, including We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions by Queen, Maggie May by Rod Stewart, Sunshine of Your Love by Cream, Free Bird by Lynnrd Skynnrd, Journey To The Center of Your Mind by The Amboy Dukes, Summertime Blues by Blue Cheer, Shapes of Things by The Yardbirds, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly (the 3 minute version, of course), Proud Mary by Credence Clearwater Revival, Gimme Some Lovin' by The Spencer Davis Group, Takin' Care of Business by Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Rock and Roll All Nite by KISS (yeah, KISS on a Dick Clark collection, heh), Mony Mony by TOmmy James & the Shondells, Wild Thing by The Troggs, You Really Got Me by the Kinks, For Your Love by the Yardbirds,She's Not There by The Zombies... and a few other songs. All for $1! How can you go wrong?
It's the Folk Troubadours cd that included this little tidbit of information: Rick Nelson's song Garden Party (which is included on the cd) is about an experience in which he and his Stone Canyon Band were booed at Madison Square Garden because they played their new material instead of sticking to his oldies. I'd never really listened to the song closely or tried to figure out what it was about.
I also learned that Keith Carradine is the son of John Carradine (star of The Grapes of Wrath, veteran Hollywood actor) and the brother of David Carradine (Kung Fu) and Robert Carradine (Revenge of the Nerds). As a folk musician, Keith was mostly a one-hit wonder.
Tarzan's Tripes Forever. This is the place I stole all of my jokes for my series of Bottles shaggy dog short shorts... it's a massive compendium of shaggy dog jokes. Fun place to visit.
Last week I picked up a new bento box, similar to one I already owned. During the week I made two bento box lunches for work... substituting salad for the rice, and tossing in some small sandwich wraps, some three-bean salad, fresh veggies with the salad (green onion, carrot, zuccini, yellow squash), grapes, some thin slices of smoked gouda and turkey beef-log (wrapped in wax paper) and a couple of small chocolate treats. I really like the idea of making bento lunches, for reasons I can't really articulate. Mine aren't fancy looking, but that's okay.
Anyway for more ideas on what to do for bento lunches I came across two excellent bento-related blog sites: Cooking Cute and Bento Corner (The Cooking Cute blog has links to a lot of other bento-related blogs).
If I ever get creative enough with my bento lunches I might have to post pictures of them... :O
