I hate it when things are unsettled. Working in a union shop doesn't make you immune from these things.

I'm up early because I was asked to come in two hours early today. This is because C, my coworker, won't be here today. He was gone yesterday when I got in, and although I don't know the details, it sounds like it wasn't by his choice. Maybe some disciplinary thing, or maybe just a family emergency, I don't know. But it's unsettling because they just let one of the customer service people go last week, and to come in and find that someone is suddenly gone is always a bit unsettling. And, of course, we have a brand new rate clerk who has only been here 1 week and is completely unprepared to be on her own for half a day. She wasn't even prepared to be left mostly to her own devices yesterday, but I didn't have any work to give her, unfortunately, so she mostly answered phones and handed them off to me if it wasn't a simple, straightforward rate quote.

And I was really hoping that now that we'd hired a new rate person to replace the one that left, things would start getting back to normal.

I don't know the story about the customer service person who was let go either, but given that we're in a union, it must have been extraordinary circumstances. You can't just get rid of someone because you don't like them or how they do their job. That's one reason we have a 3-month trial period when hiring a new person, so we can make sure they're going to fit in. Recently they let go a new billing clerk who seemed like a nice person at first, but had a tendency to backstab others at every opportunity in an attempt to make herself look good. You'd think people like that would know better than to act that way during their three month trial period, but invariably people can't help but be who they are.

We've been lucky recently that we have a good group of people (at least -- in the office where I work); in the past there were a couple of people who were really difficult to work with and/or not great workers, and those people are pretty much all gone now. Which is good because no matter how much trouble they created, they probably never could have been fired, but they left on their own.

And yet, when things are unsettled you still feel nervous. I always want things to run smoothly, you know? When a coworker is suddenly missing and the big bosses are making their presence known, it makes you nervous. And I like my boss, and I know he wants things to run smoothly too, so it's not like he's the type to stir up a hornet's nest for the fun of it. But still, yesterday was unsettling.

Or at least, I'd prefer not having to get up two hours early for work. ^_^
