Lazy lazy lazy
Jan. 7th, 2008 08:35 amSo this weekend I did... nothing. I watched some football, I exercised for an hour on Saturday, but I didn't exercise on Sunday, and I played City of Heroes for most of Saturday and part of Sunday. I'm not sure an hour of exercise makes up for a full day of sitting in front of the computer. I did play a scrapper character from 16 to 22, got a defender up a level, and changed a lot of costumes on a lot of characters. Making new costumes is still half the fun for me in this game.
I still need to finish my APA submission and print everything up. At this point it looks like it will just be Kristin, Chuck, James, Jeff (I have his sketchbooks to go through) and myself. Anyway, that's my goal for the week.
The Prophet Returneth!
Way back in the first year that I started playing CoH, someone named Uniquedragon made a post to the message boards:
This is how it start's jerk hacking (dupin)
this what happened in the last game i played hackers ruined it for everyone dupin rares and gold and just anything to cheat there no extened maintenance there trying to catch the hacker :( and we pay for it so unless people don't let GM'S know of wrong doing's in the game it we ruin it and there we not be a COH IT WELL BE GONE TO THE AMERICANS!!!!!!! :(
This post was so bizaare and incomprehensible that it became a favorite of board posters and eventually became one of the biggest inside jokes on the CoH boards, with frequent references to "jerk hackers" and things being "gone to the Americans". The post itself spawned a long series of replies, was eventually immortalized by being stickied so that it could never disappear from the sub forum it was posted to, and has to date reached more than 1500 total replies (over the last 3-3 1/2 years). Just aside from the weirdness of the syntax itself, the post was made about a game that (at the time) had no economy to speak of -- so even the subject matter seemed really goofy to people.
In the last year City of Heroes has introduced an economy -- recipes, salvage, a crafting system for special enhancements, and a market place to buy and sell them at. This has led to the same kind of farmers and money/item sellers that you get in other games, and many people have pointed out that it's all come true according to the great prophet Uniquedragon.
All of this was much enhanced by the fact that Uniquedragon made only that one post, and never posted anything every again. He was a forum legend, and part of the legend lied in the fact that he had disappeared as mysteriously as he had appeared. Even his name played into this legendary status. He and his single post were unique.
Until a week ago, when he discovered that his post was still around. As it turns out, he still plays the game -- casually, as his highest character is still not level 50. He's got a good sense of humor about the whole thing too -- he read through the entire thread (it took him several days) and laughed at it all.
His post count is now up to 8 -- all replies to the thread he started years ago. Some people have taken this as a sign of the apocalypse, or the destruction of a dream, or something -- although everyone has also said that they'd love to group with him in-game if given the chance.
Just kind of funny -- it's sort of as if a great prophet or religious figure returned to earth to find out what everyone has been saying about him and doing in his name for all of these years. Prophets aren't supposed to show up again to give additional observations on how to interpret their prophecies.
