miko2: Ranma disguised as a schoolgirl to fool Ryoga (Default)
I've been really good about exercise lately, walking at least 30-40 minutes every single day for the last two weeks. So I was very surprised when my bathroom scale said that I'd gained nearly 10 lbs recently. My bathroom scale is erratic... but it couldn't be that far off, could it?

By morning I'd lost a few pounds. Good old bathroom scale. But still, I was clearly at least several pounds heavier than a few weeks before. If I was getting my exercise and being careful about what I ate, then apparently I wasn't being careful about how much I ate.

Anyway this has led to me being even more vigilant about exercise. The weather has been nice all week, so I'd been taking the opportunity to walk outside. But you need to vary your exercise to get more out of it, and I know that walking on the treadmill produces a different kind of exercise for me than walking around outside. The former helps me work up more of a sweat and is probably better for burning calories, the latter is a better overall workout and a better cardiovascular workout. (That's my "expert" analysis.) So yesterday I went to the exercise room after dark and spent over 50 minutes on the treadmill, then a few minutes on the stair stepper and a few minutes on the weight machine just for some variety.

Today is such a nice day I decided to walk up to the park, but partway up there I changed my mind and decided to walk all the way to Green River Community College at the top of the hill. I figured if I followed the arterial around and down Lea Hill Road, that would be a pretty good hike. I figured it might be over an hour -- as it turns out, it took me over 1 hour and 20 minutes. Quite the hike, and at the end I get to climb up the hill at 105th. I'm not sure how often I want to be doing that, but it was an interesting walk.

I want to take a drive East of here to learn more of the land, drive out through Black Diamond or something. I really don't know much of the lay of the land East or South of where I live, even after two years.

Yesterday was payday. I drove up to Half Price Books in Southcenter for the third weekend in a row, and wonder of wonders, they had Futurama season 2. That means I now have seasons 1-3, leaving season 4 and the movie left to get I think. And I just finished watching season 1 last night too.

I also picked up several cds... I rarely find any of the kind of European goth/folk/viking/power metal that I've been listening to for the last year at used stores ljike Half Price Books, but I happened across Mandylion by The Gathering... which is the only cd of theirs that I own. I said to myself, "If only they had any other cd by The Gathering I'd get it..." and then, in the next bin, I found Always by The Gathering.

On the other hand since I've been listening to a lot of alt country lately, I had some new things to look for that was much easier to find... I would have liked to find a cd by The Sadies or maybe Drive by Truckers, but insteady I found Convict Pool by Calexico and Outskirts by Blue Rodeo. I also came across a Grasscals cd (bluegrass), a Cowboy Junkies cd (one of the original alt country groups), and three cds by Gomez (who I've been listening to) but I avoided buying those. The ones I bought were fairly cheap -- 5.98, 4.98, and 3.98, whereas some of the others were closer to $10.00 each.

While wandering around I spotted an anime cd -- anime soundtracks at Half Price Books? In fact, they had 30-40 of them in a separate section by themselves. There was a lot of stuff I liked and some I owned -- a bunch of Ranma 1/2 cds, a bunch of Lain, Ursei Yatsura, two Irrisponsible Captain Taylor cds, one of the Revolutionary Girl Utena cds. At first I was really excited and looked through them, but really, how many of the anime cds I already own do I listen to? And most of them were priced at $7.98... if they'd been $5 each I might have grabbed several, but at $8 each it had to be something I really wanted.

I picked out Serial Experiment Lain Soundtrack: Music by Nakaido "Chabo" Reight. I had an idea that this was an alternative folk singer with a raspy voice... I can't remember if the guy I'm thinking of did one of the opeing or closing themes for Lain or possibly for Neia Under 7, but I liked him and I knew that [livejournal.com profile] skyoxford had picked up a cd of his. Anyway, this cd wasn't him, but still, it's pretty cool.

As if I didn't have enough music already... I also got some stuff in the mail this week that I'd ordered. These were very cheap buys off of Amazon.com. One is "Marimac Anthology: Deep In Old-Time Music" which contains a track by the Wandering Ramblers, who were a local group that appear on another collection I have with a song called "Gun" that I absolutely love. This anthology is the only other thing I could find on the internet to purchase that had any music by them... I know they had at least one album/tape released back in the late 80's or early 90's, but it was such a small distribution and so long out of print that I haven't been able to find it. However, Uncle Earl has covered one of the songs by the Wandering Ramblers too. I still hope to find a cd or album of their music one day -- which should be possible since they're from the Northwest. I think they were released on Marimac too, which is why they appear on the Anthology.

The other things I picked up were Reconciled by The Call (which I'd talked about ordering last week) and Dick Clark's All-Time Hits Vol 3 which has a lot of songs from the 60's on it. I probably own most of them already, so maybe I didn't need this cd, but I have vol 2 and vol 4 already and it was very cheap.

Someone needs to remind me at the Tai-Pan meeting tonight to talk about a possible whale watch trip after Norwescon. I'm usually not one for schedules so I forgot to bring it up last month after talking about it here on Livejournal, but if we can find a good weekend that doesn't conflict with too many people then I'd like to set a date and see how many people are actually up to going. From the previous conversation on Livejournal, sometime after Norwescon sounded workable for some people, and I think we stilll have a 3-4 week window or better to work with.

We should talk about Norwescon too. I'm supposed to see if I can find a room for Adam from Alaska... although I haven't talked to him much recently, he was talking about coming down for the con again.

Also I need to ask [livejournal.com profile] dehd about that blugrass festival thing he mentioned last week.
