I was listening to This American Life this morning on my iPod, and there was a story about a guy who dresses up as Superman and goes to bars. I've heard the story before. The guy is very obsessed -- not just with Superman, but Batman as well. He owns home-made suits for both, several of each character, but he also owns actual outfits from movies and tv shows, and tons and tons of memorabilia. Dressing up as Superman (or Batman) is something he's done since his wife died. He was described as being in good shape and looks good in the outfit, btw.

What I didn't remember from before was that the guy (at least at the time the story was produced) lived in Auburn, WA.

What made it more interesting is that there's a guy where I work (in Auburn) who is Superman obsessed. He wears Superman tee shirts every single day. People call him Superman, that's what's written on his locker. I don't even know his real name -- many of his coworkers probably don't. He's just Superman.

But he's a young guy, married, skinny. Not, as far as I know, interested in Batman or in dressing up as either character, although I do think he wanted to name his son Clark. But I'm quite certain he has nothing to do with the guy in the This American Life story.

Funny, I would have bet a lot of money that he was the most Superman-obsessed guy in the area too.

Mind you, our morning dispatcher wears University of Washington Husky shirts every single day of the year too. His car is purple and gold, with the husky logo. But that's perfectly normal, yes?
