Mar. 25th, 2009 05:33 pmToday was a day to be frustrated at my work computer.
First of all, I set the Lala program loose on my computer last night. I didn't let it know where my main (175 gig) music file was, but I let it sort through my "My Music" file on the main hard drive. It matched up music that I owned to music already on Lala, and then it started uploading everything that it couldn't match up. I don't know if this is such a good idea or not, but I decided to see how things went. It was even uploading my Terry Pratchett novels.
So when I got to work I tried to listen to one of them from their web site, but that attempt failed. Later in the day I realized that, for whatever reason, no web streaming of any sort was working. A reboot fixed that.
I also went to the NPR web site to download a selection of 10 free songs that they're offering as a South by SouthWest music sampler. This involved downloading them from iTunes, which was a problem since I've never logged into iTunes from work and I couldn't remember my login/password right away. Once I got that sorted out, it started downloading all ten tracks -- and my computer ground to a halt for nearly half an hour. Yay for memory and process hogs! iTunes ranks with the very best of them!
Later I transfered my downloads to a thumb drive, and for some reason this took time and slowed my computer down a bit too. I'm not sure why; I know mp4's are larger than mp3's, and I know I don't have USB 2.0 ports, but I don't have t hose at home either and I transfered them to my home computer easily. Ah, well.

If you have an iTunes account you might consider downloading these songs. The bands are Blitzen Trapper, David Byrne & The Dirty Projectors, BLK JKS, Blind Pilot, Thao Nguyen, The Decemberists, The Avett Brothers, The Heartless Bastards, K'Naan, and Mayer Hawthorne. In particular I think the songs by The Decemberists and K'Naan are worth it (I already owned those!).
