Jan. 14th, 2010 02:45 pmI had a long overdue dentist's appointment yesterday. The short version of the story goes something like this:
April 2009: Dentist calls to schedule appointment, misses me, leaves message.
May 2009: Dentist calls to schedule appointment, misses me, leaves message.
Early June 2009: Schedule appointment with Denstist. They thought I could come in early like I used to do. I work mornings now, so schedule for 4 PM... in August. 2 months out. Yikes!
August 2009: Dentist calls to remind me about appointment, misses me, leaves mesage.
Next day: Accident on I-405. I am late to Dentist. Dentist has gone home.
Next day: Dentist calls about missed appointment, misses me, leaves message.
October 2009: Tooth breaks. Dentist is in Africa. Go see his daughter.
Next day: Schedule appointment for when Dentist gets back.
November 2009: Dentists calls to remind me of appointment, misses me, leaves message.
Next day: Get partial crown on broken tooth. Schedule cleaning appointment for 3 PM... in January. 2 months out. Yikes!
December 2009: Dentist calls about scheduling a cleaning appointment before the end of the year. Very confusing conversation ensues.*
January 2010: Dentist calls to remind me of appointment, misses me, leaves message.
(I mention all of the missed phone messages because, really, I'm not hard to get ahold of. I'm at my desk all day. For whatever reason, my Dental assistant is phenomenally good at calling when I've stepped away from my desk or am on the phone.)
*Weird December conversation:
Dentist Assistant: Hello, this is Dr. ---'s office, would you like to schedule an appontment to have your teeth cleaned before the end of the year?
Me: Um... I'm scheduled for January, can you really get me in earlier than that?
Dentist Assistant: Did you need to see the cleaning assistant instead of Dr. ----?
Me: You mean the cleaning assistant is booked into January, but the Dentist has time to clean my teeth now?
Dentist Assistant: Let's just leave you scheduled for January then shall we?
Me: Um... okay.
Anyway... went to the dentist yesterday, got my teeth cleaned. I had learned only earlier that day that Laura Veirs's new cd was out, released Tuesday 1/12/10. There are few artists these days that will make me drive to the nearest cd store to buy their new release, but Laura Veirs is one of them. I'd listened to her new cd previewed on NPR's web site as well, and she was interviewed about it on NPR over the weekend.
So I drove up to Crossroads and bought it. I stopped in to Half Price Books and picked up volume 5 and 6 of La Cordo de Oro. When I got home, I realized I already had #5. :p Oh well, it was not expensive.
I got to listen to my new cd twice through on the way home. Gotta love I-405 traffic.
Genshiken 2 vol. 3 (dvd) arrived in the mail last night. I watched it immediately. I was really excited when I learned two weeks ago that they were extending this anime series to cover the rest of the manga. Well.. they failed to actually cover the rest of the manga, leaving off how Sasahara and Oguie get together, and pretty much all of Oguie's background and how she works through her problems. They only hint at some of those plotlines. More annoying that that, though, was that they eliminated one character (Sasahara's sister) and had a completely different character take on her role for one plotline, which they didn't follow through with anyway (the group retreat, which wound up being where they learn of Oguie's past and she gets together with Sasahara). They also did a lot of rewriting... adding elements that weren't in the manga and expanding a couple of plots to fill up space that they might have used to cover some of the stuff they dropped. Annoying, but typical for anime adaptations I guess, and it's still a very funny series.
