This last week has been "iTunes reorganization" week. I sync my iPod with my gaming computer, which is the older of my two main computers and has inadequate disc drives. The secondary disc drive, my "music" disc drive, is 160 gigs and has long ago been filled. I now back up my music onto a 1 terabyte external drive. But anything I download from iTunes or Amazon still winds up on my main drive, which is only 120 gigs.

The computer has been very slow lately. In the past I've deleted stuff from the main drive and defragmented it to try to improve performance, so I tried to run the defrag program again, but there wasn't enough free room. So I looked for more stuff to delete. I don't have a lot of programs left that I don't use, so I decided I'd have to move some of my music files.

The obvious first choice was my E-music file. I don't subscribe to E-music anymore, so I'm not adding new stuff to this fle. Still, I knew it would involve a lot of reshuffling of files in iTunes and all of my playlists.

I moved the file to the external drive, and that freed up nearly 5 gigs of space. That's good for now. Out of curiousity I checked my Amazon file -- another 4 gigs of music there, roughly -- and my iTunes file. I knew that the mp4 format Itunes uses takes up space, and I've also downloaded video, but I was surprised to find that my iTunes folder alone takes up 52 gigs of space. That's not even counting the space that the program itself uses.

So that's what's taking up all of my hard drive space!

I think my goal is just to make it to late Spring and then try to upgrade my computer or buy a newer one. In the meantime, I've spent all week trying to replace songs in my various music folders that iTunes can't find because I moved the folder. I've also spent time adding albumn covers to cds that don't display in iTunes. In some cases the cover would display in iTunes but not on my iPod, so I had to fix that.

Fun. God help me if I decide I have to move my iTunes file.

Finished rereading the Genshiken manga last night. It's one of those manga that makes me sad to see end because I want to know what comes next. Ah, well. At least the manga wraps things up better than the anime did.
