...goth bands have such cheerful lyrics.

Another week of listening to goth metal bands but mostly Nightwish, of waiting for my Within Temptation cd to arrive, of eating more of the soup I made on Sunday which will last me another two days at least, and of reading W Juliet manga (I tend to collect manga and then read several volumes at once... two weeks ago I read through 5 or 6 volumes of Cheeky Angel, now it's 5 volumes of W Juliet).

Speaking of which... [livejournal.com profile] julesong had asked me at Norwescon about other gender bender manga in the Ranma 1/2 mold. I didn't have an immediate answer for her other than Futaba Kun-Change, which most people agree was that author's attempt to do his own Ranma 1/2 type story... so it's very much along the same lines, and funny, but not as well written.

Several more titles have since occured to me. Cheeky Angel is one, although it does not involve someone who routinely changes genders... but the main charcter Megumi is a girl who was (apparently) once a boy and was magically changed against her wishes, so it generally falls into the same category. It's also very very funny. Part of the humor is that, while she claims to be a boy, Megumi was transformed when she was 9 years old... and is now 15. She consequently doesn't really understand how post-pubescent 15-year-old boys think any more than any other girl does (and of course, she has quite a few that find her very attractive).

Another title (only two volumes total of it exist) is Until The Full Moon, which involves a boy with a were curse that turns him into a girl at the full moon. This series, while short, is fun, and has a lot of gay overtones in that the boy in question is betrothed (and falls in love with) another boy who is attracted to both the male and female versions of his fiancee.

Another series which has a main character that changes genders is called Les Bijoux... but I found it very uninteresting.

There are probably other series that I can't think of. The series I'm currently reading, W Juliet, isn't really gender-bending in the same way, but it involves a boy who is attending school as a girl, who falls in love with a butch girl who always dresses like a guy... which probably sounds like a very contrived setup but it's well written and lots of fun. ^_^ Of course, being a shojo manga, the main point is the love affair between the two, and while it's vital that Makato keep the fact that he's really a guy a secret, he still winds up dressing as a guy an awful lot when he and Ito think they're alone....

Well anyway I do reccoment Cheeky Angel and W Juliet especially, they're both fun reads.

Fruits Basket doesn't invole much gender-bending at all (other than lots of really pretty boys) but has a lot of similarities to Ranma 1/2 otherwise... with lots of people who transform into animals. It's also a very fun comic/anime series. I'd reccomend that very highly too.

Other music that I've been listening to... I've recently ripped to my hard drive my cds from Ned's Atomic Dustbin and Poi Dog Pondering, two interesting groups from the early 90's. I also ripped The Bobs: Plugged which was one of the only cds of theirs that I have that I didn't have on my hard drive already (I had to go looking for it). I ripped the two cds I have from Tapping the Vein, a goth band that I'm not quite sure why I ever got into them or picked them up, and after listening to them again they are not even close to a metal band like Nightwish, or a quarter as interesting, so I'm still not sure why I ever thought I'd like to pick their cds up.

Mostly these days I rip stuff to my hard drive so I can easily stream it for my friends to hear in Second Life. I've been adding things to my underwater Tiki Club. ^_^ We have our own brand of beer now, and a Tiki God named the almighty Pr0n.
