Jim is flying to Tahiti tomorrow. I am working 4 pm to Midnight (my old shift) for the rest of this week, and all of next week, and then Monday the week following, after which Jim returns.
I tried to get some sympathy from people at work because I'll have to work until midnight on a Monday and then come back in at 12:30 pm on Tuesday... but they all know I live 10 minutes away from work, so they don't feel sorry for me at all. :p
We failed to get Jim a book to read on the plane. I was going to lend him one of mine, if I could have decided on one, but I failed to do that last night. Sandy did better than me, she bought a card and an Elmore Leonard book (one of his favorite authors), but it turned out to be one he'd already read. I think he's actually read all of the ones in print, and the new one he thought was coming out isn't out yet. Anyway, he's just going to pick up something at the airport, but since he likes crime fiction I might have tried to lend him one of Pratchett's Watch books, to see if I could get him to read one of my favorite authors. ^_^
I've been buying too many cds lately, and that's even considering that I knew I would be getting my bonus check this last week. But the one cd that I really wanted was the Within Temptation cd. I've had the title track Mother Earth stuck in my head ever since I discovered the video for it on You Tube. I would have bought it at a local store so that I could own it immediately, but nobody seemed to have it. So I ordered it from Amazon, along with another cheap cd that came in two days. That was April 25th. Nothing came the rest of the week. And then I ordered some more stuff, and all of that eventually came, but not the Within Temptation cd.
I checked Amazon but they said it should arrive between the 4th and the 14th, so I still had some time yet to wait... nevermind that stuff often arrives in just a few days, and I'd ordered it on April 23rd. This weekend I noticed that for some reason the address that Amazon had for me wasn't showing my apartment number -- but I was certain it had been there before, because I'd ordered stuff and it had all arrived, apart from the Within Temptation cd.
Anyway I fixed the address because I was in the middle of ordering something else, and then it forced me to re-enter my credit card info, which is a good precaution since I'd altered my address but still annoying since I'd only added an apartment number.
So... last night I checked Amazon again and noticed that I could trace my cd through Caiman.com's own web site. I've ordered a lot of stuff from Caiman.com via Amazon, I've always gotten good service from them so if a cd is available for a good price from them, I'll pick them over someone I don't know who has it for maybe 50 cents or a buck cheaper. Anyway, I checked their web site, and it said that the cd had been mailed out on the 24th, the day after I'd ordered it.
It only took me a moment to realize that the address they had did not show my apartment number. Neither had all of the other stuff that I'd ordered in the last couple of weeks, all of which had arrived at my mail box anyway -- but the one thing that I really wanted the most had apparently been turned back due to the incomplete address.
And it would be several more days before I could do anything like cancel my order through Amazon... another week at least, or longer if I waited for the cd to make its way back to Caiman, which apparently it hadn't done yet. None of this was Caiman's fault of course, it was all my fault, but I still wanted my cd.
So, in one of those stupid moves that I really shouldn't have made, I decided to order the same cd from someone else. There was another person offering it for sale through Amazon who was brand new, had no feedback/reviews yet, but who was located here in Washington state. I knew that if I ordered from him I'd get it in a day or two. So I did.
I also ordered something else at the same time. And I used my credit union credit card, even though I suspected it was close to its max limit (I keep a relatively low max limit on this card to prevent me from abusing it too much, and given that I'm always within a few hundred bucks at most of that max limit, I think I'm justified in not raising my limit any further). Normally I'd use my other credit card, but I hadn't re-entered the information for that card yet after changing my address a couple of days before. Re-entering that information would have required me to get up and go to the other room... and I'm noting if not lazy. So I used the credit union card hoping that I had enough credit left on it.
And... when I got up in the morning, the payment for the Within Temptation cd had been rejected. Not the other thing I'd ordered, of course, that had gone through just fine, only after which was my card at the limit. :p
Well anyway, I fixed the problem and maybe my cd really is on its way now... and eventally I may get a second copy and have to decide what to do with it, but that's something to worry about for another day.
I did get something in the mail today that I had been expecting for a long time, and thought I'd be waiting for for another week or two at least. My last month's rent check from the people that bought the triplex I used to live in. So there's a good chunk of money that I realistically should use to pay some bills with or put away in savings, given that I don't need it for anything else at the moment. Or maybe I should think of hitting Ikea this weekend and getting some sort of hutch or entertainment center thingy for my stereo equipment, that's been one of my back burner projects since I moved.
I've been working on my Ranma 1/2 story all week... so at least I've been writing something, even if it's on an open-ended fan fiction story that breaks no new ground and which I still don't know if and when I'll publish any of it. I'd like to get a ways into the story before publishing anything.
