Today's word is Kerfluffle. I don't know why. It just is.
In sports today, The United States still suck at "soccer" and Ben Roethlisberger is a complete idiot.
In other news, the power went out at work around 8 pm. This was bad. But the emergency generator kicked in and we were all able to log back in on our computers immediately. This was good. But for some reason, the emergency generators only powered the electricity outlets, and not the lights. We were bathed in the fading light from the windows, the light from computer monitors, and the emergency light from the exit signs. I was able to work just fine, I could see my computer screen after all. I had a desk lamp that I let one of the billers borrow -- they needed to be able to read freight bills, so they needed light sources.
It wasn't until I was heading home that I realized that the downstairs office was completely without power. It was very dark. The dispatchers weren't anywhere to be seen -- without computers they can't do much. I saw the terminal manager with a bunch of plastic store bags full of things -- I wasn sure what, something to provide light I'm sure. The dock was VERY dark. It didn't look like the dockworkers were going to be able to keep loading and unloading freight after the sun set.
Two blocks North of work there were lights on everywhere. I drove up to 15th, took a right, passed gas stations and fast food restaurants that all had lights, went through three intersections that had lights. It seemed like a problem local to where my company is. But then at the Auburn Way intersection all the lights were out. I'm not quite sure what that might indicate, everything past that had power again, and I hadn't lost power at home.
Anyway it was kind of interesting billing freight in the dark. Kinda spooky. But I hope they can get everything done tonight, it won't be fun in the morning if a lot of freight didn't get loaded or billed because of the lack of lights/power.
