The Wintersmith Cometh
Oct. 17th, 2006 11:14 amOne of the things I worried about in August was how well I'd be able to keep up my daily walk/exercise when the weather turned bad. It's easy to get up and go for a walk in sunny Summer weather, not so easy when it rains. Which it does a lot in this part of the country.
The Sunday before last I didn't walk at all, on the theory that it didn't look very warm or inviting outside. Not even that it looked like rain really, because it didn't look like rain at all. But it was supposed to be sunny and it wasn't, and I was feeling lazy so I didn't do my walk. But I know that missing one day every now and then isn't such a bad thing -- I don't need to exercise every day of the week, I just like to because it's easier to keep it up if I don't skip any days. So I felt guilty for skipping, and the rest of the week I got up and did my walk.
On Saturday I got ready and went out, and got the mail. I was going to go on my walk, but I convinced myself that it looked like it was about to rain. Did I feel a drop on my hand? On my cheek? Hard to say. It did rain later in the evening, but anyway, I skipped my walk again on Saturday.
And then it rained Sunday and Monday, but I couldn't skip two days in a row so I walked for an hour indoors. And again I felt annoyed at myself for skipping when I didn't really have to. I should save up a "skip" day for when the weather really is ugly outside, not just when it's the weekend and I'm lazy and the weather doesn't seem perfect.
Anyway today was not a perfect day but it didn't seem likely to rain anytime soon, so I did my walking outside. It was kind of damp, but mostly from fog. I know walking for an hour indoors is still an hour of continuous aerobic exercise, but I get a better workout by walking up the hill and around the Auburndale Park pathway, so I feel better when I'm able to do that. And I'm pretty sure I should be able to do that all Winter, as long as it's not raining outside or twenty degrees.
Last week I was going to bed around 1:30 or so and waking up around 9:40, with the idea that I should take my walk between 10 and 11 am, which of course never happened. I need time to wake up in the morning, so I usually didn't get my walk started until around 10:20. This gave me just enough time to get back, shower, get ready for work, eat breakfast, and make it to work by 12:30 (it takes about 10 minutes to get to work).
Last night was cold. I can feel winter coming. It seemed like a good night to curl up on the couch with a blanket and read, so now I'm about halfway through Wintersmith. I didn't log on to Second Life, and I went to bed earlier, around 12:20. So I set my alarm clock for 8:50 am. This gave me more than eight hours of sleep, and yet I still felt really tired when I got up and wanted to go back to sleep -- probably just because I was getting up earlier than I'm used to. I laid down in the livingroom and read some more, and I actually managed to start my walk at 10 am like I'd been planning to all last week. ^_^
