I ordered three cds last week. Two of them were novelty cds. I ordered all three from the same company on Amazon.com -- a company called Caiman.com based in Florida, which has always given me very good and very fast service. (For some reason their customer rating is rather low -- about 90% -- but I've ordered from them many many times and they've always been excellent, even refunding me on an order that never arrived that they apparently never got back either.) Anyway, I figured they would ship fast (they did) and they could bundle the three cds together (they didn't -- in fact two of them arrived on the same day in completely different types of packaging. Go figure.)
The funny thing about such fast service is that after the third cd arrived today, I realized that I had nothing else coming to me in the mail, and I was kind of sad about that. As if it would be better that the cd take 2 weeks to arrive, so that every day I still have something to look forward to.
The third, non-novelty cd is by a band I heard on NPR. This band plays a weird amalgamam of old-school blues, jazz, and tin pan alley style pop. They use a million different instruments to create a truly unusual soundscape. They even use Tuvan throat singers Huun-Hur-Tu on three tracks. As such, they share things in common with several bands I or my friends value highly -- a little Squirrel Nut Zippers, a little They Might Be Giants, a little Yat-Kha, a little Tom Waits. I know for an absolute fact that
skyoxford, at least, would grok on them, and probably a lot of my other friends would too.
Now, here's my diliema. Do I introduce my friends to this cool band? Or do I keep the band a secret on the theory that Christmas is less than 2 months away, and I've found something that might make a great gift for someone? ^_^ I'm torn by my desire to force cool music upon my friends and an equal desire to start planning for Christmas.
I do need to be careful this Christmas. I need to make a list early of who I want to buy gifts for, and set myself a limit on what I can spend, so I don't go overboard. When I try to buy for all of my friends and all of my immediate relatives I wind up being poor or more in debt, and there's really no need to do that. If I can make a list and then figure out how much I have to spend on gifts, then I'll be able to figure out what I'm allowed to spend per person and keep myself to a budget. That would be ideal, anyway.
Ali is currently flying from Australia to Alaska. This is one of my friends in SL, and a very close friend of Nara -- so close that she's going to hang out with Nara for a couple of weeks before coming to Chicago with us for MFF. I have no idea where in Australia she lives, but she said her flight plan went to Melburne first, then Los Angeles, then Seattle, then Anchorage... and it would take 45 hours. 45 hours! I can't imagine spending two days flying.
And then, after the con, she goes straight home from Chicago... which I guess will be an even longer flight.
We're going to go see Blind Guardian and Leaves' Eyes the night before heading to the con. I went online to buy the extra ticket last night (I already had two).
