Off we go!
Nov. 16th, 2006 09:06 amYesterday was a blur. I got to the airport around 12:15, then saw that flight 2 from Alaska was delayed. I waited quite a long time before finally deciding at about 12:45 that I should use the time to walk around, as I hadn't gotten in my morning walk that morning. Eventually my two friends showed up around 1:15 pm, and we loaded up the car and headed North.
We drove I-90 out to Sammamish, where the power was out and therefore downtown Sammamish had a bit of a traffic jam. We picked up the rubber noses that they'd bought from a special designer named Tim (he'd left them in a box on his porch) and then headed to Renton, where Legend was waiting for us. He gave us the grand tour of Wizards of the Coast, gave us some gifts from the store (Magic the Gathering -- yay) and treated us to an excellent lunch at a local steak restaurant. He's just a very, very nice and generous person.
After that we drove back to my place in Auburn even though I figured we might be late to the concert, which I was under the impression started at 7pm. We got there about 7:25 pm or so, only to realize that the doors supposedly opened at 8pm and there was a long line. Nor did the doors really open exactly at 8pm, and they had to pat everyone down, which meant a very slow moving line. Leaves' Eyes didn't even start playing until about 9:30pm.
The venue was small. When I got in there was a small room that I took to be the front foyer, and I was trying to figure out where the doors to the actual concert area were, when Adam pointed out that this WAS the concert area, and the thing right in front of us was the stage. My God it was small. It makes me wonder that King's X has complained about not being able to find places to play and not being able to make a living touring, and here's two bands from Europe and they are playing a place MUCH MUCH smaller than I've ever seen King's X play at.
Anyway, Leaves' Eyes were incredible, Liv Kristine has an amazing voice and is also a very nice friendly person (she and her husband talked to the fans afterwards, talking pictures and signing stuff -- Adam got a hug, and bought shirts for me and Ali, and got Ali's shirt signed).
Blind Guardian was incredibly tight and they have an amazing guitarist, but of course their vocalist although adequate and good at working the crowd just doesn't measure up to Kristine or to the talent level of his own band. Still, they are an awesome band. We decided to leave early because Ali just wasn't into them that much and we needed to get up early today for the trip to Chicago. It was a good decision too, Adam and Ali had gotten virtually no sleep the night before and both were ready to crash.
Right now I've got about an hour to get them up and make breakfast before we're all on our way. Next post should be from Midwest Furfest. ^_^
