Today's Song: Hold Me Up by Velvet Crush
Hold Me Up is my favorite track from the only cd I own by Velvet Crush: 1994's Teenage Symphonies to God. You can tell from the title, if you know your rock history, that this is a band influenced by the Beach Boys. What you get is jangly guitar power pop in the mold of the Raspberries or Big Star. I bought this cd based solely on a review, and I actually had it on a list of things to check out for maybe two years before I bought it. Still, it was a very good purchase -- I like this stuff. Two of their cds were produced by Matthew Sweet, also a creator of great power pop music (and an artist I've followed much more closely over the years).
Anyway I can't link you to any clips of this particular song, but it's one of their best, and is listed as the favorite download of theirs on iTunes. But to get an idea of what the band sounds like, some of their newer material can be heard at their myspace site.
Their web site, which frankly doesn't contain a whole lot of info, can be found at: http://www.velvetcrushrockgroup.com/
Finally, here's the only video I found on Youtube related to the band... this is actually a live video of Matthew Sweet singing his song Ugly Truth, with Velvet Crush acting as his backing band. Maybe not a great intro to the band, but it's interesting nonetheless, especially if you like Matthew Sweet. ^_^
