The Screaming Trees were one of the early-nineties Northwest bands that were lumped into the "grunge" movement. They came from Ellensberg, WA. They mixed 60's psychadelia with 80's punk rock, and featured the distinctive low-range voice of Mark Lanegan.
I always liked the Screaming Trees. They were one of those bands that, despite being in the right place at the right time, never managed to latch on to success. The band members didn't get along well, which led to some of their problems and their eventual breakup, but they made some very good albums first.
Shadow of the Season comes from their album Sweet Oblivion (the album title is one of the lyrics from this song). It's my favorite song of this band. I suppose it could be considered very typical of the grunge movement for it's dark, brooding lyrics, but personally I like this song better than anything by Nirvana, Soundgarden, or Pearl Jam. Mark Lanegan not only has a very cool voice, he's a gifted songwriter, and has had a nice solo career following the breakup of the band. He also is often a guest vocalist for others, most notably for The Queens of the Stone Age. In fact, those songs that he provides vocals for are some of the best from Queens of the Stone Age.
Not a new song at all, but one of the best from the whole grunge era in my opinion. ^_^
